2019 MPGR

2019 marked Hungrybox’s third consecutive year as the No. 1 player in the world. This is the longest streak of any person to be ranked No. 1 since Melee’s global rankings began in 2013. As a result, Hungrybox may rival the GOAT status of Adam “Armada” Lindgren. When he actively competed, Armada was heralded for his consistency against all non-top 6 players.

Some players took to Twitter to criticize some of the placements on the 2019 MPGR. Specifically, players complained because Leffen ranked ahead of Mang0, Wizzrobe ranked ahead of Zain, and Mew2King ranked ahead of Fiction. Some believe the panelists are disincentivizing attendance by overly punishing bad losses and extrapolating for players with few tournament appearances.

Albert had the highest top 100 debut of anyone on the 2019 PGR. His placement is largely a result of his performance at Low Tier City 7, where he defeated Hungrybox and Lucky. Albert also boasts wins over Ginger, billybopeep, and Bladewise. Bimbo and Setchi also placed in the top 50 in their first appearances on the year-end rankings.

Besides newcomers, Morsecode762 and Magi made the largest climbs up the ranking, climbing 55 and 54 spots, respectively. Conversely, Rocky and Ryan Ford had the longest falls, dropping 41 and 40 spaces, respectively. This, of course, is not including players who dropped out of the top 100 altogether because of inactivity.
