Athletes receive special look at new Call of Duty game

The annual Call of Duty promotion is starting around the same time they do every year. Earlier today, Activision invited several professional athletes out to its development studio to playtest the newest installment.

Around April each year, Activision will begin to tease the new Call of Duty coming out in the fall. While no trailers or gameplay will be unveiled until May, there are still different marketing tactics used beforehand. Last year, Houston Rockets star James Harden rocked a Black Ops 4 hat before a playoff game.

It seems as though Activision likes this strategy, as various athletes were able to play the upcoming game earlier today. Posted on Instagram, NFL receiver Tajae Sharpe and prospect Riley Ridley revealed they played the new Call of Duty early. When asked where the game ranks all-time, Sharpe said: “Top 2 and it’s not 2.”

What this means for the new Call of Duty

Obviously, if Activision is allowing people to play this game early, it’s in a good spot. Most likely in an alpha build, the new Call of Duty has been speculated about since the summer of 2018. Long thought to be Modern Warfare 4, fans won’t have to wait much longer for an announcement.

This time last year, Activision did the same thing with Black Ops 4. The company invited celebrities and athletes to play the game early, even though nothing was announced publically yet. This is to simply build up hype for the game before a full trailer launches.

If Call of Duty follows previous years, then we should see a new trailer within the next couple of weeks. Most years, there is a commercial during the NBA Playoffs that show off the game to a larger audience.

However, the title of the game and a short trailer will be released to the public before then. Early May is the most probable estimate for a reveal, with the commercial shortly following.

We will most likely see more and more celebrities post about the new game in the upcoming days. These “Call of Duty Partners” will, of course, remain hushed, but the fact that the game has been shown means some leaks could come out. There are usually two to three big leaks that surface days before the official reveal, so stay tuned.
