Spencer “BestNess” Garner won Smash Ultimate Singles at the Slopes Arcade Invitational in Salt Lake City, Utah on Jan. 31. The eight-man invitational included round robin pools, which led into a final double elimination bracket.

In pools, BestNess dropped a set to Nicko Bonilla. Of course, this was only a minor setback, and it ended up being BestNess’ only loss throughout the whole tournament. He also earned 2-0 victories over Eric “Pandarian” Lund and Luis “Lui$” Oceguera in pools.

BestNess continued to put up strong performances in the main bracket. He found himself in Grand Finals on winners side after defeating James “VoiD” Makekau-Tyson 3-1 and Matt “Elegant” Fitzpatrick 3-2. BestNess concluded his run at the Slopes Arcade Invitational by beating Chris “WaDi” Boston 3-1 in Grands.

As a C-tier, the Slopes Arcade Invitational was BestNess’ most prestigious tournament victory to date for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. BestNess is currently ranked No. 43 on the Fall 2019 PGRU. Last season, he earned wins over the likes of Paris “Light” Ramirez, Ishiguro “Raito” Tetsuya, and Alexis “Goblin” Stennett.

BestNess previously expressed his desire to retire from competitive Smash back in December. Despite this, he attended the Slopes Arcade Invitational, as well as Genesis 7 earlier in the month. It is unclear to what extent this Utah native will travel for Smash going forward. However, BestNess is notably registered for Frostbite 2020, which will take place in Detroit, Michigan later this month.

Other results from the Slopes Arcade Invitational

WaDi had a slow start to the Slopes Arcade Invitational, dropping sets to Elegant and VoiD in pools. While he was able to beat Nicholas “Ned” Dovel, he still started the main bracket in losers. Despite this, WaDi put together an impressive losers run to make it all the way to Grand Finals. Along the way, he eliminated Pandarian, Lui$, Nicko, and Elegant.

Elegant also put up some strong results on his road to 3rd place. Notably, Elegant was undefeated in pools, winning three-game sets over WaDi, Ned, and VoiD. In the main bracket, he won a five-game set against Lui$ before losing five-game sets to both BestNess and WaDi.
