Beyond the Summit announced the Slippi Champions League, an online Super Smash Bros. Melee circuit on September 4. As the organization has done with previous Smash Summit events, it will pioneer a new format of competitive Melee through this circuit.

The Slippi Champions League will last four weeks, with $5000 in prizes available each week. For the first week, Beyond the Summit will invite 16 players, who will be divided into two Divisions. Division 1 will feature an eight-person single-elimination bracket, with the winners staying in Division 1 for the next week, and the losers dropping to Division 1 Relegation. In Division 2, four winners will advance to Division 1 Relegation, while the losers drop to Division 2 Relegation.

Division 1 Relegation will pit Division 1 losers against Division 2 winners. The winners in these sets will make it to Division 1 for the next week, while the losers fall into Division 2. Conversely, Division 2 Relegation will pit Division 2 losers against four players from an Open Bracket qualifier. In this case, the winners advance into Division 2 for the next week, and the losers must qualify through the next Open Bracket for a chance to return to the competition.

More about the Slippi Champions League

Currently, the Slippi Champions League is restricted to players in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, Aiden “Calvin” McCaig mentioned that the team would love to provide similar opportunities for international scenes in the future. However, it seems there are currently no specific plans for a more global circuit.

Beyond the Summit announced the cancellation of all of its in-person Smash tournaments for the rest of the year on August 28. These included Ultimate Summit 3, Mainstage 2020, and Crossover Summit. While the Slippi Champions League may act as its replacement Melee event, the organization hasn’t announced any replacement Ultimate events.

The inaugural Slippi Champions League season will kick off with Week 1 on October 11. Beyond that, the Summit has not yet revealed the 16 invitees.
