After months and months of mystery, we finally have confirmed information for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer. The gameplay reveal event was everything that we as a community could have hoped for. Developer talks, Create-A-Class walkthrough, and most importantly, gameplay.
Today we will be focusing on Modern Warfare as a whole and less on the actual gameplay mechanics. The developers gave us great insight on what to expect leading up to launch and a roadmap of what’s to come.
So let’s dive in and go over everything that was said in the Modern Warfare multiplayer premiere.
Open Beta dates set / Crossplay introduced
In what has become customary for Call of Duty, there are two open betas set before launch. This is a time for developer Infinity Ward to garner community feedback and make small changes before release.
The first of these open betas is going to be Sept. 12-16. This is only for PlayStation users, as they have an exclusivity deal with Activision for this year. The beta opens up on Sept. 12 for everyone who preorders Modern Warfare. Then the open beta for PS4 only starts Sept. 14.
A few short days after the first beta ends, a new one begins. This time, however, it will be a cross-play beta. For the first time in Call of Duty, cross-play functionality will be present. This means that starting on Sept. 19, any preorder user can hop in and play with any other preorder user, no matter their console.
On Sept. 21, Modern Warfare will be open to anyone who has downloaded the game. You are able to turn on/off crossplay depending on your preference.
No Season Pass for Modern Warfare
One of the biggest knocks on every Call of Duty since the early 2010s is the use of a Season Pass. Traditionally, COD will have four DLC packs, each with a variety of maps and other cosmetics available for purchase.
However, you could buy the Season Pass separately for around $40-50 and get all the maps as soon as they came out. This was a greedy practice used by Activision and was hated by the community.
Well, with Modern Warfare, you can say goodbye to any version of a Season Pass. Confirmed by developers at Infinity Ward, there will be free maps given to all players throughout the year as well as varying cosmetics. This is a huge win for Call of Duty and its player base. Hopefully, Activision stays true to their word this go-round.
Modern Warfare Dark Edition
Every year Call of Duty comes out with different editions of the current title. These usually go for well over $100 but include some real-life items prevalent to the nature of the game. It also comes with a different case and some in-game items.
This year, Infinity Ward decided to go all-out. In the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Dark Edition, you get the base game, three Operator skin packs (cosmetic only), a skin for the Tactical Knife, a Calling Card, a Steelbook Case, and actual Night Vision goggles.
These goggles were debuted on the reveal stream and seem to work the same as the ones in-game. It’s up to you whether or not you think this edition is worth over double the price of the base game.
