The numbers are out for this year’s edition of the Street Fighter V Capcom Pro Tour event at Tokyo Game Show and the prize is no joke. A 10 million yen prize pool ($90,000 USD) is up for grabs. Yes, you read that right — almost $100K is on the line.
2018 will be the year this tournament truly makes a name for itself as it’s the first Street Fighter V tournament in Japan allowing Japanese players to compete as honest-to-goodness paid professionals. This is possible thanks to the pro-gamer license known as the Japan Esports Union (JeSU) pro player license. The new law came into effect back in February, letting event organizers go around the strict gambling laws currently present in the country to offer bigger prize pools.
Under the current law with regards to tournaments, they cannot hand out large cash prizes to pro players if those same players paid an entrance fee to get into the event. Before this, organizers of any of those types of events were restricted to much more modest 100,000 yen (about $900 USD) prize pools. Those rules applied to esports as well.
This is great news for Japan and companies looking to enter their competitive market. Also, who wouldn’t want to win a piece of that sweet sweet prize money! Japan is a hub for fighting games and tournaments so this can only help them in the long run. - 5th place ties – ¥150,000
- 7th place ties – ¥100,000
