Pool Play is over and done with from CWL Champs 2019. The second day of tournament play saw more of what we expected to happen in terms of wins and losses. While there were certainly some stunners, the teams who we thought would make it into bracket play ended up securing victories.

After yesterday’s shocking GenG debacle, day 2 settled things down a touch. Though some amateur teams made it through, most of the top teams in the CWL will be duking it out in the Winners Bracket tomorrow. Let’s go over some of the key storylines from day 2 of CWL Champs.

Luminosity survive on the back of Skyz

If you were fortunate enough to tune into the first match of the day, you saw one of the most intense matches in Call of Duty history. Luminosity was taking on UYU, and they needed a win to keep their tournament hopes alive.

The match started out normally, but it really picked up steam towards the final two games. In the second hardpoint, UYU completed a major comeback on Arsenal to tie things up 2-2, setting up the final S&D. Although it went back and forth, it looked like UYU had the edge in the final round. However, in one of the most nerve-wracking 1v1’s in CoD history, Luminosity’s Cesar “Skyz” Bueno took down UYU’s Anthony “Methodz” Zinni.

This 1v1 win kept LG’s run alive, but they still needed help from Singularity. The surprise team of the tournament, Singularity needed to defeat UYU to secure LG the second seed in Pool E. Though it came down to the wire, Singularity beat UYU. As such, LG moves on as well.

Luminosity plays 100 Thieves tomorrow in Winners Round 1. Singularity takes on Sicario Gaming, another amateur squad.

100 Thieves, OpTic Gaming, eUnited continue to roll

Widely considered the three favorites, 100 Thieves, OpTic, and eUnited all went 3-0 in their pools. 100 Thieves and eUnited went 9-2 in map count, while OpTic went 9-3, losing one map each match.

Though there were some other squads to go 3-0, the three above teams seem to be on another level. Most would agree that 100 Thieves, OpTic, and eUnited are the best teams remaining in terms of talent. How that translates into bracket play, though, is still up in the air.

100 Thieves will take on Luminosity in the Winners Bracket. Meanwhile, OpTic will play Team Heretics, and eUnited will face Team WaR.

Amateur squads make some noise on day 2

Although there were only three amateur teams to make it out of pools, the way they did it was fantastic. Team WaR, Singularity, and Sicario Gaming are the rosters that made it into bracket play.

Perhaps the surprise team of the tournament, Singularity went 3-0 in pools, defeating both LG and UYU decisively. Though their lack of experience could come back to bite them in the Winners Bracket, they have a ton of momentum heading into day 3.

Both Team WaR and Sicario Gaming have multiple veterans on their squad. However, they both defeated Pro League teams to make it into bracket play. Some might give these two teams the edge over Singularity due to their previous tournament runs.

Singularity and Sicario Gaming match up in Winners round 1, and Team War will take on red-hot eUnited. Can Team WaR knock out another top team as they did with GenG?
