CWL London Day 1 recap: OpTic Gaming return to form

The first day of CWL London is in the books, as both brackets are set for Saturday. After a lengthy delay due to technical issues, the Call of Duty games eventually got underway, including notable displays (good and bad) by OpTic Gaming, Luminosity Gaming, and FaZe Clan. While there were some surprises, most of the pools went nearly as expected.

Day 2 is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. ET with four matches on four different streams. Although, the headlining match is a return to an old rivalry, with OpTic vs. FaZe Clan starting at 10:30 a.m. ET.

However, even though day 2 should be action-packed, day 1 had its moments as well. Here’s everything that went down on the first day of CWL London.

OpTic look like OpTic again

Ever since CWL Las Vegas, the Greenwall haven’t looked like themselves. Sloppy respawns and terrible Search and Destroy maps were far too common for this all-star roster. Of course, losing Brandon “Dashy” Otell for two weeks didn’t help matters.

Although, it seems like those issues are in the past. OpTic Gaming dominated their pool today, aside from going map 5 with Enigma6. Each game mode for OpTic went according to plan and they were never blown out like in recent matches.

Sitting atop Pool A after thoroughly beating 100 Thieves, they look to continue their run against FaZe tomorrow in the winners bracket.

Luminosity lose full at CWL London

One of the favorites going into CWL London, Luminosity Gaming faltered in tremendous fashion. Only winning three out of 12 maps, they sit at the bottom of Pool D and face a lengthy losers bracket run. This tweet from Matthew “FormaL” Piper sums up the experience fairly well.

Many in the community felt a drop coming for Luminosity. Yes, they won CWL Fort Worth handily. However, they weren’t crushing teams in the Pro League after this tournament win. In fact, they seemed a bit out of sorts at times. This ultimately leads to their performance so far in London.

So, while a losers bracket run is still possible, Luminosity is most likely facing an early exit. Although, with the talent on this roster, nothing is impossible.

New look FaZe Clan prove themselves

Out of all the teams to make a roster change during “Rostermania,” it seems as though FaZe Clan made the best decisions. While the tournament isn’t over yet, they are the only high-profile squad to sit in winners bracket with a new roster.

Aside from a close loss to eUnited, FaZe Clan looked rock solid. The talent on the roster mesh well and there are no glaring weaknesses. However, their confidence will be put to the test in winners bracket round 1 when they go up against red-hot OpTic Gaming.

If they manage to squeak out with a win, look for FaZe to make a serious run at the finals. Although, if they fall to the Greenwall, a losers bracket run isn’t out of the question either.
