Day 4: Wednesday, Feb. 21

Team Heretics vs. Excelerate Gaming

Series scoreline: 3 – 0 Team Heretics

Team Heretics continue their tear through the ranks of Division B. The first match started off with a back-and-forth Hardpoint Gridlock. Heretics eventually controlled the match tempo, ending the map with a scoreline of 250 – 219 in their favor. The second map, Search and Destroy Frequency, was more one-sided, with Heretics taking a comfortable 6 – 3 win. Finally, the Control Frequency was a close game, with Excelerate constantly a thorn in Heretics’ side. The Spanish aggression ultimately paid off, taking the map 3 – 2.

Team Heretics played excellently today, reacting well even in difficult situations. The team’s chemistry and individual talent has not faltered, and they take a successful first week. Not taking anything from Excelerate, constant hot starts from them every map pushed the Spanish the distance. However, it does seem like Excelerate are at their skill ceiling, with players consistently showing up, but not having a good enough support system. At times, it looks as if some players perform amazingly at the expense of the majority of the team.

MVP of the series: Endika “Sukry” Andres

Team Envy vs. Denial Esports

Series scoreline: 3 – 1 Team Envy

Unexpectedly, this series for Team Envy was a much more difficult fight than expected. The Hardpoint Gridlock was close, with the victor decided on a split-second play on the final hill. Team Envy closed out the map, 250 – 246. Denial Esports took Envy the distance, winning the Search and Destroy Arsenal 6 – 5. The Control Gridlock also was anyone’s game, but Envy closed it out 3 – 2. Finally, Envy closed the series out in a dominating fashion. The final map, Hardpoint Arsenal, ended in a hundred-point club with the final score of 250 – 58.

While star player Cuyler “Huke” Garland continues to impress, the rest of Team Envy remain a conundrum. The rest of the roster hasn’t shown a level of consistency and take turns in performing and choking. Their SMG Justin “SiLLY” Fargo-Palmer has looked like their second-best player, but even he’s had a few too many off-games. Envy setups are easily broken and team fights always look like a struggle. Denial Esports are no better, currently sitting at the bottom of the division. Both of these teams may need to focus on how to improve at least one or two players on their roster.

MVP of the series: Cuyler “Huke” Garland

Splyce vs. Enigma6

Series scoreline: 3 – 1 Splyce

Just like the previous series, Splyce were constantly challenged in order to maintain their win streak. Despite always edging out fights, Enigma6 trailed close behind Splyce in the Hardpoint Hacienda. The map eventually ended 250 – 202 to Splyce. Rounds on the Search and Destroy Hacienda went to the wire, with multiple 1v1s. Splyce took the map with a scoreline of 6 – 5. Enigma6 demonstrated strong holds and slaying prowess in the Control Seaside, taking the map 3 – 2. Similar to the first map, the Hardpoint Frequency was a close game. Splyce fought off Enigma6’s catch-up, eventually winning 250 – 230.

Enigma6 looked locked and loaded with confidence coming into the CWL Pro League. Despite looking like a well-composed team, individual players are making small errors that cost the team. Additionally, with their top player Matthew “KiSMET” Tinsley not performing, Splyce easily take advantage. Splyce simply have such well-defined roles, with every member set up for success. It seems the way to take games off Splyce is exactly how E6 managed game three, control. Teams can’t let Splyce get into a tempo and need to have fast and explosive starts.

MVP of the series: Ulysses “AquA” Silva

eUnited vs. 100 Thieves

Series scoreline: 3 – 2 eUnited

100 Thieves went the distance versus the CWL Vegas finalists. EUnited took a narrow victory of 250 – 242 on Hardpoint Seaside. The Search and Destroy Arsenal went back and forth, going to eUnited, 6 – 5. 100 Thieves showed that they were no slouch in the Control Frequency though. A lack of coordination from eUnited led to a 3 – 0 victory for 100T. They continued this momentum into the Hardpoint Gridlock, taking a close 250 – 225. The final map, Search and Destroy Frequency, ended 6 – 4. EUnited capitalized on 100T’s mistakes, despite being in disadvantageous positions.

100 Thieves definitely deserve a “most improved” title. The squad still makes fundamental mistakes, such as not being able to capitalize on man-advantage situations. A major influence for 100T’s improvement today was better performance from SMG Ian “Enable” Wyatt. If he can maintain the level shown today, it gives 100 Thieves a strong frontline foundation. EUnited is showing small signs of faltering in the occasional map. Despite that, SMG Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris has really found his place as a key player for the team.

MVP of the series: Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris

This wraps up the first week of Division B in the CWL Pro League. But the CWL continues next week, finishing the rest of the division’s matches. For now, here are the current standings for Division B after the third week.

The next week will be important for these teams as it will determine the seedings going into the next major event, CWL Fort Worth. With the standings in Division A teams already set, teams in Division B will be able to control their fates in the second half of their split.
