DreamHack announces LAN Fortnite tournaments in Sweden and the US

DreamHack has announced two separate Fortnite tournaments with a total prize pool of $500,000. The first event, DreamHack Winter, will take place in Jönköping, Sweden from Nov 29 to Dec 1. Then, the US tournament will occur in Anaheim, California from Feb 21 to Feb 23.

The two tournaments are run separately and consist only of LAN play during those weekends. Both tournaments will require players to bring their own computers to the LAN event. Ages 13 and over are allowed to participate, but minors must have parental consent. Additionally, tickets are available for both players and spectators.

Tournament format

DreamHack Winter will be a solo competition with multiple stages. The top 100 players will win prizes, but players must advance through three stages to come out on top. The first stage is open to all players that purchase a “bring your own computer” (BYOC) ticket. Stage one consists of three heats and ten matches played for each player. Then, the top 200 players from each heat advance to stage two.

Stage two also consists of ten matches, but it has no heats. All 600 players will play in the same player pool and can play a maximum of ten matches. The top 100 players will advance to stage three.

The final stage consists of eight matches, after which a winner will be crowned. Ultimately, though, all players that reach the final stage win prize money. Even 100th place will win $500, which is a nice little chunk of cash. Of course, it hardly compares to the first-place prize of $30,000.

The USA tournament is expected to have the same format, but the official rules have yet to be released.

DreamHack Winter point system

The point system for this event promotes both eliminations and placement. Each elimination rewards players with five points, but placement points change for each position in a match. The first place in a match receives 60 points. Second-place receives 53 points. Third-place gets 49. These placement points continue to drop slightly down to 50th, which receives only one point. Players do not receive points after 50th place in a match.

These DreamHack tournaments will no doubt be massive LAN events. The format allows all players to participate in the event; the only requirement is to buy a ticket. BYOC tickets range from $100 USD to $232 USD for a premium ticket.
