Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 released this weekend to much fanfare. The latest title in Activision’s long-running series has sparked rampant interest, mostly due to its foray into battle royale. But, with any new game launch, there are bound to be issues such as glitches, or simply shortcuts that the developer might have just missed.

One such shortcut has been stirring up trouble within Blackout mode. Players have already exploited the emote feature to see their character in third-person view in order to sit snuggly hidden behind cover while “peeking” out at the landscape beyond for potential prey. Specifically, the sitting bull emote has the player avatar squat in a stationary position that makes the tactic of “peeking” all the easier.

A patch is on the way

Of course, players have become concerned by the weaponized use of emotes as it makes camping extremely easy and safe for the offender. Thankfully, Treyarch has taken notice of the exploit and is going to provide a fix in the coming days. Here’s what the development studio had to say about the matter in a posting on the Black Ops 4 subreddit:

We’re aware that players have been able to use Gestures (often referred to by the community as ‘Emotes’) to peek around corners in modes where that can create an unfair advantage. We’re currently working on an update that creates two systems for Gestures – the default system that is in the game now, and a competitive version that disables free look and applies different camera settings to prevent using it to see around corners. The default system will be used in parts of the game where corner peeking won’t affect gameplay balance (like the staging area of Blackout), and the competitive version will be used in modes where a more restrictive camera system is needed. We want players to always have fun with Gestures as intended, but never at the expense of fair gameplay!

So there it is, “peeking” won’t’ be a thing for long in Black Ops 4. This wasn’t something that could have been caught during the beta as emotes were not available at that time. However, it’s great to see that the development team is on top of the issue. If you read the remainder of the Reddit posting, you will find that a couple other changes are coming to multiplayer including preventing Razor Wire from causing “team kill” detection in Hardcore modes as well as better spawning in the Domination mode.

What do you think of the peeking fiasco? Since it’s technically not exploiting a glitch or utilizing a hack, it is a valid tactic to use at this stage. What are your experiences with the issue? We’d love to hear thoughts in the comments below.
