Eric “ESAM” Lew & Jestise “MVD” Negron have won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Doubles at Combo Breaker 2019 on May 24.
The duo reached Grand Finals by beating Enrique “Maister” Hernandez & Adrian “Nuhuh” Cuellar and Yatiyaña “yeti” Schaper & Karvin “Comet” White Jr. ESAM and MVD lost the first set of Grands to Jason “ANTi” Bates & Joshua “Pelca” Bedoya. However, ESAM and MVD emerged victorious after a grueling 10-game Grand Finals.
Combo Breaker is an FGC tournament series in St. Charles, Illinois. In addition to Smash Ultimate Doubles and Singles, Combo Breaker 2019 features events for Mortal Kombat 11, Tekken 7, and Dragon Ball FighterZ, among others.
ESAM and MVD are no strangers to the Doubles spotlight. The two players have been teaming together since 2010 during the Super Smash Bros. Brawl era. Their success in Doubles continued into Smash 4 and now Smash Ultimate. The Combo Breaker Doubles event marks their third teams win together in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Their first two victories came at Don’t Park on the Grass 2018 and Ultimate Shockwave 11.
Despite their persistent success in Doubles, ESAM and MVD have still yet to win Doubles at a supermajor Ultimate tournament. They have come close, however. This static duo placed 2nd at Frostbite 2019, Full Bloom 5, and Battle of BC 3. They also placed 3rd at GENESIS 6 and Get On My Level 2019.

Both of the Combo Breaker Doubles champions have had great success in Singles as well. ESAM placed 3rd at Get On My Level 2019 just one week before his appearance at Combo Breaker 2019. He also won Battle of BC 3 in March, beating Elliot “Ally” Carroza-Oyarce and Eric “Pandarian” Lund.
MVD has placed 1st at a handful of Singles events, including Don’t Park on the Grass 2018 and Come to Papa 3. Along the way, he has accrued victories on players like ESAM, Landon “Captain L” Trybuch, Antony “MuteAce” H, and Tetsuya “Raito” Ishiguro.
