Evil Geniuses signs Matt and Deftly for Academy roster

North American esports organization Evil Geniuses has announced that support Matthew “Matt” Elento and AD carry Matthew “Deftly” Chen will start for its League of Legends Academy roster as the team enters the 2020 season.

Matt and Deftly reunite

Matt joins the organization as a new player. Deftly transitions to the Academy lineup after being acquired from Cloud9 alongside Dennis “Svenskeren” Johnsen, Tristan “Zeyzal” Stidam, and Colin “Kumo” Zhao. Both players competed together during the 2018 North American League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) season. While Golden Guardians placed last in both Spring and Summer Splits, each player has achieved better results since then.

Matt last competed for Team Liquid Academy, a team he was with for several years before transitioning to the Golden State Warriors esports affiliate for one season. While there, Matt led the team to 3rd during the 2019 Academy Spring Split and Playoffs. Unfortunately, the roster did not do as well during the Summer Split, with a 5th place finish after losing to Team SoloMid Academy in the playoffs.

Deftly will play for Evil Geniuses after previously competing for Cloud9, which he joined as part of a trade where Yuri “Keith” Jew left for the Golden Guardians. He played for both teams while on Cloud9, with the Academy roster taking 1st and the main roster placing 2nd during the Summer Split. The 22-year-old later played in one game at the 2019 World Championship, where he boasted a 7 k/d/a.

Evil Geniuses into 2020

Some teams in the LCS will swap players on the Academy roster with their main lineup. However, this same case doesn’t seem likely for Evil Geniuses, who have star players like AD carry Bae “Bang” Jun-sik and support Tristan “Zeyzal” Stidam.

No further information has been released on the other members or coaching staff for the roster. Keep up with Daily Esports for all of your League of Legends coverage.
