Finding players in Ultimate Team card packs just got a whole lot easier in FIFA 19 with the introduction of pack odds.

FIFA 19 to feature pack odds in Ultimate Team

EA Sports Vice President and COO Daryl Holt recently confirmed this to Eurogamer saying that,”for Ultimate Team, when you buy a pack you know what you are getting. You are getting a certain number of assets that are guaranteed – and we’re going to start to do pack odds disclosures that’ll show you the odds of what you might get.”

What this means is that whenever players go to purchase a pack in Ultimate Team, there will be odds shown as to what you can expect to get. Holt and EA didn’t go into detail about how they plan on revealing the pack odds, but the fact of the matter is that FIFA player’s voices have been heard. For years now players of FIFA have been crying out for updates on Ultimate Team, more specifically the packs. The problem for FIFA players was the lack of clarity as to what they would be getting with the pack.

FIFA 18 Ultimate Team packs

In FIFA 18 the description for a standard gold pack in Ultimate Team is very bleak. It says that players will get a mix of 12 items, with at least 10 of the items being gold rated, and one rare card. The problem with this description is that it doesn’t give the player any idea what type of cards they should expect to see. What I mean by this is that Ultimate Team packs feature a mix of player and consumable cards.

As you can see above, the consumable cards range from player contracts, club kits, badges, and various other items, and the player cards feature players from the game. Now when you open a pack, the consumable items usually outweigh the player cards, which is somewhat frustrating for players of the game. Therein lies the whole problem, players don’t know what they’re getting. The description of 12 items is vague because players could end up with only three players and nine other consumable items. With the introduction of pack odds in FIFA 19, players should hopefully have a better idea of what type of cards they will get.

How the pack odds should work

Being an avid FIFA player, I have lived through the pain of opening packs. I know the feeling of getting my hopes up and then getting absolutely nothing. For EA to stop this pain, the packs should give a breakdown of the odds of getting players of a particular rating. For example in a standard gold pack, the card packs could say:

  • a mix of 12 items, ten gold cards, one rare
  •  player cards and consumable items
  • 40% chance of player card rated 75-79
  • 30% chance of player card rated 79-84
  • 20% chance of player card rated 85-88
  • 15% chance of player card rated 89-93

This breakdown could be a major upgrade for FIFA. Players would now know the exact possibilities they have when opening a pack in Ultimate Team. If EA could find an effective way of producing pack odds in Ultimate Team, it will undoubtedly breathe new air into the FIFA life.
