Florida Mayhem releases Mayhem Academy Contenders team

In a statement put out by Mayhem Academy, the esports organization announced they have released their players and coaching staff. Serving as the Overwatch Contenders team for the Florida Mayhem, Mayhem Academy specified that they wanted to “retool [their] Contenders team.” They plan to rejoin Contenders in “the near future.”

Mayhem Academy

Mayhem Academy is an Overwatch Contenders team owned by the Misfits esports organization. Their former player roster consisted of Cameron “Wub” Johnson, Liam “Mangachu” Campbell, Andreas “Epzz” Wallvingskog, Tim “Manneten” Bylund, and Nolan “Paintbrush” Edwards. The Academy team also had three coaching staff which included Head Coach Justin “Reprize” Hand, Strategic Coach Vishal “CurryshotGG” Nathani, and Analyst Daumantas “Ryuu” Krugliakovas.

Former Head Coach Reprize posted a statement on his Twitter with personal messages. These included his thoughts and comments on each of the departing Mayhem Academy players and coaching staff. He also wrote similar messages for members of the Florida Mayhem team.

During the first season of the 2019 Overwatch Contenders season, both the Academy and main lineup saw a number of player trades and roster changes. They originally finished North American East Season 1 in first place with 6 wins and 1 loss. This tied them with Fusion University for win-loss record, but they did not do so well in the Playoffs Semifinals. After a loss to Gladiators Legion, they eventually took a 3-4th place finish.

Florida Mayhem

Right before the start of stage two of the Overwatch League, Florida Mayhem released their Western players. They replaced these three spots with Korean players instead, making their roster completely Korean. They attributed this to “multiple issues with communication and overall team synergy” because of a barrier in language between players and coaching staff.

Former flex tank Caleb “McGravy” McGarvey left to the Los Angeles Valiant. Meanwhile, Kevyn “TviQ” Lindström and Damon “Apply” Conti became inactive players.
