FlyQuest announced it is branching into competitive Super Smash Bros. by signing John “KoDoRiN” Ko as its first Melee player on Wednesday. KoDoRiN will represent his new organization this weekend at Smash Summit 12.

“KoDoRiN exudes FlyQuest’s ethos of thoughtfulness and generosity as he loves to share his knowledge through coaching sessions and educational content,” a statement on the FlyQuest website said. “We’re excited to partner with KoDoRiN as he aspires to be one of the best Smash Melee players in the world.”

Besides a brief stint in Rocket League that ended in 2018, FlyQuest has largely fielded League of Legends teams, including LCS and Academy rosters. Now, KoDoRiN will lead the charge as the organization’s first representative for Smash or any other fighting game.

“Expect greatness in upcoming events the next year with this wonderful org,” KoDoRiN tweeted.

KoDoRiN’s journey before joining FlyQuest

Over the past few years, KoDoRiN has had one of the most meteoric rises in all of Melee. KoDoRiN began competing in 2018. He quickly became a notable player in Southern California, one of the strongest regions in the world. Then, at the end of 2019, he debuted on the top 100 as No. 70 in the world, with wins over the likes of Avery “Ginger” Wilson, Armand “ARMY” Del Duca, Weston “Westballz” Dennis, Joey “Lucky” Aldama and Griffin “Faceroll” Williams.

KoDoRiN continued to rack up great local wins in early 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic brought offline competition to a halt. Nevertheless, he continued to improve and excel at online tournaments over quarantine. Now that in-person tournaments have returned, KoDoRiN’s results have brought him in contention for the top 10 in North America.

In true Marth main fashion, KoDoRiN has beaten almost every high-level Fox player he has faced in 2021. Among them are Cody “iBDW” Schwab, Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni and Kurtis “moky” Pratt. His resume of wins this year also includes Johnny “S2J” Kim, Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby, Shephard “Fiction” Lima and many more. Going forward, KoDoRiN will continue to slay all the Foxes in his path under the FlyQuest banner.
