Happy birthday, Fortnite: Epic celebrates game’s first anniversary with themed event

Fortnite is a year old as of this month and Epic is celebrating with an in-game birthday themed event. From July 24 until August 7, players can earn exclusive birthday cosmetics by completing unique challenges. In a post on their official blog, Epic wrote:

Happy Birthday Fortnite Fans!

Starting July 24th, we’ll be celebrating #Fortnite1st with a limited time in-game event! You can earn special birthday cosmetics by completing birthday challenges and quests in-game. From the birthday Battle Bus to the sploder husks carrying a tasty surprise, we can’t wait to party with you! The in-game celebration lasts until August 7!

Each challenge you complete will unlock a slice of the birthday cosmetic set. Share your squad’s best birthday cake dance party with #Fortnite1st on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Unfortunately, there isn’t too much creativity to the challenges. Play 14 matches to unlock 5,000 experience points, and Deal 1,000 damage to receive a Fortnite Birthday! emoticon. The only new challenge is to Dance in front of different Birthday Cakes, which unlocks a Happy Birthday! spray. Completing all three of these challenges nets players a Birthday Cake back bling. While these challenges may not be entirely unique, their simplicity means even the most casual players can enjoy the rewards.

Meanwhile, there are a few other rewards for Save the World players. Completing the new Fortnite Birthday questline unlocks the “Birthday Brigade” Ramirez hero, and tickets can be spent on new Birthday Llamas. For those of you who mostly play Battle Royale, the Fortnite Llamas serve as the game’s version of loot boxes. Players can either purchase or unlock these llamas which, when cracked, spill random assorted rewards. Typically, the rewards are dependent on season. However, in celebration of Fortnite‘s birthday, the Birthday Llamas contain Heroes and weapons from all prior events this year. This does not, however, include quest rewards.

The festivities begin on Tuesday, July 24. If you can’t get enough of Fortnite until then, be sure to watch this week’s Summer Skirmish tournament. Unlike the first, this event focuses on Solo competition and overall score, so it should mitigate the issues with last week’s event. Otherwise, enjoy our guide to this week’s Season 5 challenges, and we’ll see you on Tuesday!
