Fortnite Chapter 2: the 5 best new features

For the first time in a long time, a Fortnite update was released to nearly universal praise. While some do feel that a few adjustments need to be made, the overall consensus is that Chapter 2 is one of the best iterations of Fortnite. From the map and its aesthetics to the new weapons and vehicles, people aren’t finding too many things to complain about. Let’s go over what we feel are the five best new features added to Fortnite Chapter 2.

1. Upgrading weapons in exchange for materials

A completely unexpected change, the new upgrading system is one of Fortnite‘s best additions. While the vending machines, now vaulted, were somewhat similar, this feature takes it to a whole new level.

Scattered around the map are now upgrading machines that allow you to swap materials for an upgraded weapon. For example, if you have a gray M16 and find an upgrading machine, you can exchange a set number of materials for a green M16.

This works for every weapon, even if there isn’t an extra tier for your specific weapon. If you try to upgrade a blue M16, it will offer you a purple Scar. This will keep happening until you reach legendary rarity.

This system offers a fair trade-off, as you need to exchange anywhere from 50 to 200 of each material to upgrade your weapon. The upgrade machines can be found in buildings/houses around the map.

2. Fishing for health and weapons

Another surprising addition is the new fishing pole and fish items. Since the new Fortnite map is much more water-oriented, Epic Games felt that something besides the new boat and swimming mechanic was needed. Also, giving players more options for health is never a bad thing.

Spawning in chests and on the floor, players can find a gray fishing pole that will take up an inventory slot. This pole can be used on any water section of the map. However, there are certain “hot spots” where a number of different fish are.

By fishing on this hot spot, players can pull in various types of items. Thanks to @iFireMonkey on Twitter, we can see exactly what those items are and what they do.

The hot spot can also give out various weapons, but hauling in a fish is more common. All of the items, excluding the Mythical Goldfish and Rusty Can, offer healing in some way. Floppers are the most common item to receive, which help out tremendously if you’re stuck in the storm.

3. The ability to carry knocked players

Although this new mechanic is being used for trolling purposes, the basis of the feature is sound — picking up a knocked teammate and carrying them to safety instead of them crawling out in the open.

This new mechanic just makes it so you have a better shot of living if you get knocked. However, it does balance out since the person carrying the knocked teammate runs slower and can’t use any item or weapon while doing so.

4. An open-world-style map

For those that are familiar with open-world games, the new Fortnite map shouldn’t be anything new. When first loading into Fortnite Chapter 2, players will see their entire map (when you press the map keybind) blacked out. Locations are replaced with question marks and it’s harder to see where you’re headed.

The only way for you to clear up your map is by traveling to different locations. Once you land or visit a POI, its name will appear and part of the map will become clear. The same thing happens when you travel around the rest of the map.

While you may not know where you’re going, this new feature makes it so you have to visit every location on the map.

5. New legendary chests

Last on this list is one of the smaller features that Fortnite Chapter 2 brought. Placed in various spots around the map are gray and silver chests that reward players with legendary weapons/items. In addition to the weapon, some kind of healing also spawns out of the chest.

This is a subtle change to the game but improves the loot pool tremendously. Now, instead of waiting for a supply drop or llama out in the open, you can search for a legendary chest. They’re not too plentiful though, as to ensure everyone doesn’t have a gold Scar on them at all times.
