Fortnite reveals ‘Mistborn’ protagonist Kelsier tie-in skin

An unexpected collaboration but one with a history

Epic Games has released a cryptic teaser on Twitter for Fortnite, including a quote from Brandon Sanderson’s “Mistborn” series. This could be a hint of an upcoming collaboration between the two properties or teasing something that Season 7 will bring to the battle royale. Update: Epic has since revealed that the tie-in is a skin of Mistborn protagonist Kelsier.

“You’re the one they call the survivor,” the Tweet reads. “Those scars on your arms give you away. You’re a troublemaker.”

While it is unclear what the Fortnite and “Mistborn” tie-in entails, it could involve one of the protagonists: Kelsier, the survivor. Sanderson has talked about Fortnite on his stream in the past. However, a tie-in was the last thing that fans of his novels thought about. Some Fortnite players have even speculated seeing Kelsier in a Fortnite loading screen.

What is ‘Mistborn’ and why is it coming to Fortnite?

The Fortnite teaser is from the series of “Mistborn” novels by American author Brandon Sanderson. The fantasy series is set in a world where evil has won over a thousand years ago. A small crew of thieves and ne’er-do-wells plan to rob the godlike emperor. Kelsier is the leader of the crew.

Sanderson’s novels have sold by the millions across the world. Set in a greater overarching universe called “the Cosmere,” “Mistborn” includes hard magic systems based on various types of metals that give users abilities. Examples of this are pushing on other metal sources (thus creating bullets or sending oneself flying in large arches) and growing physically or mentally more powerful. Characters with these abilities are called “Mistborn.”

“Mistborn” entering Fortnite allows for more than just one tie-in, though. The series is set in an overarching universe that follows the same laws of nature, magic, planets, gods and more. If “Mistborn” can enter Fortnite, the likes of “Stormlight Archive,” “Elantris” and “Warbreaker” and more could follow.

Sanderson and Epic games: more likely than you think

While a “Mistborn” or cosmere tie-in with Fortnite may seem to be coming out of left field, there is precedence. Fortnite had a tie-in of “Infinity Blade” (also by Epic Games); Sanderson wrote the novella.

“Brandon Sanderson is my very favorite author EVER!” Donald Mustard, Epic games CCO, said. He often teases collaborations months ahead of time, as seen in a Tweet: “Book four of Stormlight is out today… and it’s blowing my mind!!!”

Sanderson lives up the road from Mustard. He even convinced Mustard to put something into Fortnite for his son.

What’s happening with Fortnite ahead of the ‘Mistborn’ collab?

Fortnite is in the final weeks of Season 6. It has brought crafting mechanics, wild AI-controlled animals and other new mechanics to the battle royale. Season 7 is fast approaching with some fans theorizing that Epic Games will add aliens to the game.

Finally, Fortnite has been flooded with various collaborations lately, with characters from “Terminator,” “Alien,” “Teen Titans,” a “Batman” comic series, “GI Joe” and many other properties coming to the item shop.
