FunPlus Phoenix flew and lifted the Summoners Cup last season after an impressive 3-0 in the finals against G2. However, victories of the previous season remain in the history books, and the present is not off to a great start. After two games played in week one, FPX sits at the bottom of the LPL standings.

The offseason for the FPX team did not involve any significant changes as they kept their main roster, further extending the Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang and Kim”Doinb” Tae-sang magic. They brought in T1’s top laner Kim “Khan” Dong-ha and Chen “REFRA1N” Kuan-Ting as a coach. FPX played the first match of the LPL 2020 against Invictus Gaming and recorded their first defeat of the Spring Split. League fans and analysts predicted a tight game. Nonetheless, many still expected FPX to come out on top, considering they knocked out IG at Worlds 2019 semifinals in superb fashion.

FPX week one defeat

FPX started their game against IG with khan picked to play top lane ahead of Kim”GimGoon” Han-saem. The best of three series between these sides ended in a win for IG who outclassed FPX in the final game. Khan when compared to IG’s top laner Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok was not too good. Game two of the series saw Khan on fire with six kills, but that form ended with the game.

With the first series of week one not going their way, they then lost the second series to the new LPL side, eStar. The eStar team won the series with a 2-1 lead and currently seat at the top of the  LPL standings. Just fresh off from losing at the hands of IG. FPX has now gone through that same defeat against a team that did not even exist in 2019 LPL. The back to back loss for the team means that they have lost the same amount of matches as they did in all of 2019 regular Spring Split.

Even though the Spring Split just started, FPX still needs to find that rhythm for team play and overall cohesion. Doinb may need to switch to tanks. This will allow Khan to play a strong carry for now, or they could swap in GimGoon. All in all, other players, especially Tian, do need to step up for the 2020 season.
