G2 Esports Caps crowned 2019 LEC Spring split MVP

LoL Esports announced on their social media that this split’s LEC MVP is none other than Rasmus “Caps” Winther. The G2 Esports mid laner is only the second player in LEC and EU LCS history to win the award back to back. The first to do so is also the former jungler of G2 Esports, Kim “Trick” Gang-yun.

Caps won his first award back in summer 2018 when he was still on the Fnatic roster. He picked up seven Player of the Game awards and was also second overall in the standings. Additionally, he got placed on the All-Pro team with 125 points. In comparison, the second-placed Erlend “Nukeduck” Våtevik only scored 77 points in the All-Pro voting.

Caps was one of the favorites to win the award, but there were many reasons to disagree. Most people though a back-to-back title is very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. The roster of G2 Esports is also fairly stacked, with many talented players in all roles. This, in theory, means that it’s way harder to stand out, but Caps proved the doubters wrong.

Caps’ controversial offseason transfer

Caps was heavily criticized after leaving Fnatic this past offseason to join G2 Esports. The fans simply didn’t see a reason for his departure, since the team achieved great success in the last season. The move forced G2’s former mid laner Luka “Perkz” Perkovič to transition to the ADC role. Even though it seemed like an odd move at first, it paid off tremendously. G2 finished the split in first with 13 wins and were able to secure a first-round playoff bye as early as at the end of Week 7. The team was also able to cleanly sweep Origen in the second round of the playoffs, granting themselves a spot in Rotterdam.
