In an epic battle of two League of Legends titans, one had to come up on top. Luckily for European fans, the winner of this matchup was none other than G2 Esports, who managed to overcome SKT. In four extremely close games, the European representatives managed to come back from huge deficits, using SKT’s numerous mistakes to drag themselves back into the game.
Game 1
The series started off strong, with the first game having a lot of action in the early stages. SKT pulled ahead early, but G2 didn’t need long to catch up. As SKT attempted a risky baron, G2 responded by pushing into their base and securing the inhibitor. Following that, SKT pushed down the middle lane, using their baron pushing power. G2 reacted by sending a member to the top lane, securing SKT’s inhibitor tower. A huge fight around baron was won by G2, allowing them to confidently finish this game and take the lead in this series.
Game 2
A kill from an early invade looked promising for G2, but Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok managed to get a return kill on the LeBlanc as well. What followed was the SKT show, as G2 simply couldn’t find an answer to their onslaught. Even though they tried hard to fight them off, they were no match for the LeBlanc and the Yasuo. After securing baron, SKT made several pushes towards G2’s base. What followed was a series of fights, all won by G2. Picking up another dragon and baron, SKT looked like they would be able to finish the game. In a last-ditch attempt, G2 Esports went for the elder dragon. Unfortunately, SKT’s Kim “Clid” Tae-min managed to steal the dragon as his teammates obliterated G2’s health bars. SKT went on to finish the game, tying up the series as it headed into game three.
Game 3
Game 3 of this series already looked lost for G2 Esports in the first few minutes, as SKT managed to kill Wunder’s Camile twice. However, G2 managed to at least partially even it out after shutting down the Renekton and claiming his bounty. SKT firmly held onto their gold lead, but somehow they weren’t able to gain a notable advantage on the map. Following a weird engage attempt from Faker, G2 Esports collapsed onto SKT, nearly acing them. This swung the momentum entirely in their favor as they pushed into the enemy base through the bottom lane. SKT went for another baron attempt but lost an important fight as the result. Confidently, G2 Esports entered SKT’s base and initiated a fight. SKT were left in shambles as G2 Esports took the series to match point.
Game 4
An early kill by G2 Esports in the bottom lane brought joy to European fans, but it wasn’t for long. SKT decided to once again swap Cho “Mata” Se-hyeong in, due to Lee “Effort” Sang-ho’s poor performance in the previous game. SKT, in a similar fashion to previous games, dominated the early game, but they failed to translate their lead into a win. Time after time, G2 Esports managed to come back from a huge deficit, winning fights they shouldn’t have. Surprisingly, numerous positional mistakes made by Faker provided G2 with perfect engage opportunities.
The game went back and forth like that. But in the end, Luka “Perkz” Perković came in to save the day. After a close fight in the jungle, it looked as though SKT would be able to win the game. However, after respawning, Perkz rushed in to secure a quadra kill, booking G2 a ticket to the Worlds finals.
