Earlier today, it was announced that Lee “Ganked by Mom” Chang-seok (GBM) will become Korean team Griffin’s next head coach. GBM has been a part of the professional League of Legends scene since 2013. While some might remember him from his days competing under the CJ Entus Frost banner, he has spent a lot of time in the western scene in his recent years.
GBM’s time in the west
After GBM’s days in Korea, he spent late-2016 to the end of 2019 competing in various American, European, and Turkish regional teams. During his time in the west, he has had mixed success. His main victory came during his run in the North American Challenger Series (NACS), back in 2017. GBM and his team, eUnited, managed to win the regular season of the NACS and place 2nd in the playoffs. However, they failed to qualify into the NALCS, losing out against the organization Phoenix1.
After this, GBM moved to play in the Turkish league, the TCL. He went on to lead his team to two playoffs victories, plus a chance to compete at Worlds 2018. However, 2019 was a tough year for him. He left his team, Supermassive, and joined Royal Youth. Though the team managed to make it to 3rd place in the regular season, they lost out in the top 4 of the playoffs of the 2019 TCL winter split.
After this result, GBM decided to take a chance on the Galatasaray Esports team, a promising new organization in Turkey. However, not long after joining the team, rumors started of the Turkish organization not paying their players. This was later confirmed by the players, and the problem remains ongoing to this day.
Coaching Griffin to their next title
After all that Griffin has been through at the end of 2019, the main thing they are looking for is stability and experience. GBM aims to offer this for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season of the LCK. This comes after they lost their past coaching staff during their 2019 World Championship run.
