GeT_RiGhT teases retirement, announces transition to content creation

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) legend Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” (GTR) Alesund announced his transition into full-time streaming and teased his official retirement from competing. GTR is an ex-professional Swedish CS:GO player. Over his 18 year career, GTR has grown into one of the game’s most recognizable players.

Notably, GTR was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) 10 times over his time competing. Furthermore, he ranked HLTV’s best player in 2013 and 2014 and 2nd best player in 2010 and 2011. His five years competing with Ninjas in Pyjamas (NiP) defined an inimitable era of CS:GO. In 2020, he reunited with his former teammates under the Dignitas banner. Later that year, he was benched from the team.

The start of something new

Late 2020, GTR teased his Twitter followers with a mysterious video of a slow walk through an ominous room. Since then, the ex-pro continued to release short snippets and vague tweets hinting at a major announcement. On January 16, GTR went live on Twitch after a month’s hiatus from streaming. GTR then announced he’s re-signed with Dignitas not as a professional player, but as a full-time content creator.

Possible GTR retirement on the horizon?

What’s more, GTR opened up about the prospect of officially retiring from competing. In an emotional moment, he said, “I’m not going to be competing anymore. I’m not going to say forever, but I’m saying I’m taking a long, extended break, but it could eventually go into retirement.” To the surprise of many, GTR confirmed he would not be pursuing a professional career in Valorant either.

After his initial announcement, GTR dove into personal details surrounding his career shift. He opened up about his mental health issues over the last few years and struggles with an undisclosed stomach disease. He explained he’s taking this transition as an opportunity to focus on the important things in his life, like his health and growth as a person. Needless to say, his community poured warm sentiments and support. This news marks the end of an era, but CS:GO fans look forward to seeing GTR’s new career flourish.
