Ginger and n0ne voted into Smash Summit 8 on final voting day
Super Smash Bros. Melee fans voted Avery “Ginger” Wilson and Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby into Smash Summit 8 on May 28. They are the final two vote-ins. The first three vote-ins to Summit were Te Tuhi “Spud” Kelly, Álvaro “Trif” García Moral, and Cody “iBDW” Schwab.
Ginger and n0ne both campaigned through the final moments of Smash Summit voting by livestreaming and advertising themselves on Twitter. This allowed them to edge out the other two remaining contenders, Joey “Lucky” Aldama and Diego “Cool Lime” Wheat. Lucky was unable to make it into Summit even despite the campaign support from Melee fan favorite Joseph “Mang0” Marquez.

Smash Summit 8 is a Melee invitational taking place in Los Angeles, California on June 13 – 16. Fourteen players have now been confirmed for the tournament. Players will compete for the final two spots at a pair of upcoming events. The first is Smash’N’Splash 5, from May 31 to June 2. The second is The Kid, The Goat, and The Mang0, set for June 8 – 9.
Mang0 and Alex “Alex19” Ruvalcaba commentated the final vote-ins on the Beyond the Summit Smash Twitch channel. Mang0 will compete at Smash Summit 8 himself. It is currently unconfirmed if Alex19 will make an appearance at the actual event.
Prior to Smash Summit 7, every single Melee Summit featured exactly one vote-in from a foreign country. Smash Summit 7 broke this trend, as every vote-in hailed from the United States. Smash Summit 8 has undone this trend in the opposite way, as three of the five vote-ins are international players. These players are Spud from New Zealand, Trif from Spain, and n0ne from Nicaragua.
Meet the players
Ginger debuted on the SSBMRank 2017 as no. 49 in the world. He improved slightly throughout 2018, moving up to no. 40. Ginger has similarly improved at a steady rate throughout 2019, with a handful of solid wins and respectable tournament placings. This is Ginger’s second Summit appearance, after Smash Summit 6 in May 2018.
Ginger notably made Top 8 at GENESIS 6, the first major tournament of 2019. He also placed in the top 16 of the other two majors he attended, Full Bloom 5 and Pound 2019. Ginger’s best wins this year include Kalindi “KJH” Henderson, Griffin “Captain Faceroll” Williams, Charlie “AbsentPage” McKinley, iBDW, and Lucky.

Improvements happened at a more rapid pace for n0ne. He debuted in the Top 100 back in 2015 as no. 58 in the world. Since then, n0ne has shot up into the top 20 and has remained there ever since. He peaked at no. 16 in the world on the MPGR 2018. He has made two Smash Summit appearances before: one at Smash Summit 3 in November 2016 and one at Smash Summit 6.
Despite his impressive 2018, n0ne has been relatively inactive throughout 2019. Ever since his former patron, Allegiance, shut down, n0ne has been unable to travel and attend tournaments outside of Canada, where he currently lives. He made his 2019 major tournament debut earlier this month at Get On My Level 2019, where he placed 13th. His best wins so far in 2019 include Anthony “Slox” Detres and Ginger. Smash Summit 8 may give n0ne the chance to add more wins to his relatively empty résumé for the year.
