How to beat the Spikemuth Gym in Pokémon Sword and Shield

You’re nearing the end of your Gym Challenge in Pokémon Sword and Shield, but you still have two more gyms to go. The seventh Gym is in, or rather just is, Spikemuth. This grungy city is home to Team Yell, and you will have to battle them to get to the Gym Leader. Here are some tips for beating it.

The best Pokémon to bring to Spikemuth

Spikemuth Gym is home to Dark-type users. Dark-type Pokémon are weak against Fighting, Bug, and Fairy-type attacks. Having a Fighting-type, a Bug-type, and a Ground-type will help you a lot here. Ground-type moves are good against Poison-types, and Drapion and Skuntank are both part poison, so Fighting won’t be super-effective against them.

A Machoke, Machamp, or Lucario with Earthquake is a great option for this Gym. You can also bring a Bug-type like Butterfree or Orbeetle to help you with Malamar. All these Pokémon appear in different parts of the Wild Area. You can also catch a Gigantamax Machamp and Butterfree to use, but you won’t be able to Gigantamax in Spikemuth.

The Gym Mission

There isn’t really a traditional Gym Mission in Spikemuth. As you progress through the city, you will battle against a series of Team Yell Grunts. Each of the Grunts will have a single Dark-type Pokémon. You will have to beat them all to progress.

Once you beat all the other trainers, you will battle against the Gym Leader, Piers. Piers hates Dynamaxing, so neither of you will be able to Dynamax your Pokémon during the battle. Piers has a Level 44 Scrafty, a Level 45 Malamar, a Level 45 Skuntank, and a Level 46 Obstagoon. Use Fighting-type moves against Scrafty and Obstagoon, Bug-type against Malamar, and Ground-type against Skuntank.

Spikemuth Piers

Once you beat Piers, you will only have one more Gym to beat before heading to Wyndon and battling in the Tournament. Stay tuned for more Pokémon news and guides!
