How to fix Dev Error 5537 in Call of Duty: Vanguard

The most infamous error message in Vanguard

Early on in Call of Duty: Vanguard’s life cycle, players were plagued by error messages that prevented them from enjoying a consistent experience while playing Vanguard, as these messages often mean they were kicked from the game. The most infamous of the bunch so far has been Dev Error 5537, which does not carry an explanation with it when it surfaces in Vanguard.

This error message isn’t a concrete glitch, despite Vanguard featuring many of those in its first month. Instead, it’s a bug that the developers need to fix. It’s triggered by a specific action on the part of the player that shouldn’t end up resulting in a dev error. Below, players can find out why they’re receiving Dev Error 5537 and how they can avoid it.

Fixing Dev Error 5537 in Vanguard

Dev Error 5537 is caused by players trying to switch any Operator’s skin in Vanguard multiplayer. It’s unknown why this triggers this specific dev error but matching reports confirm this is the reason. Once players try to change Operator skins, the game crashes, citing Dev Error 5537 and forcing players to change their Operator skin all over again.

Changing the skin on an Operator doesn’t trigger the error every time, though. When players do encounter the error message, they can do the following to try and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

  • Exit out of Vanguard from the Battle.Net application
  • Go to the Vanguard page and click on the gear icon next to its blue named box
  • Click “Scan and Repair” and wait for the process to finish
  • Follow the steps laid out by the process
  • Relaunch Vanguard and try to change an Operator’s skin

If players can change their Operator’s skin, then all might be well for the time being. However, this isn’t a long-term fix for the issue. That only lies with Sledgehammer Games and their ability to push out a patch to eliminate the cause for Dev Error 5537. It’s unknown when the developers could release a patch to fix this issue, though. Players can keep track of that fix and all others on Vanguard’s official Trello Board.
