Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at EGLX 2019 in Toronto, Canada on Oct 20. Hungrybox previously announced that this would be his last tournament of the year. As a result, he has finished 2019 with a whopping twelve tournament victories.
As expected, Hungrybox swept through pools unscathed. His dominance continued in Winners Quarters as he swept Ryan Ford. However, he was met with a much greater challenge in Winners Semis. For the second tournament in the row, Hungrybox lost a five-game set to Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman.
However, Hungrybox reversed the script from The Big House in EGLX 2019 Melee Losers Quarters, beating Joseph “Mang0” Marquez 3-1 (and the one game Hungrybox lost was a bit of a throwaway game, as he challenged Mang0 in a Falco ditto). Then, Hungrybox earned an impressive 3-0 victory over Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett (against whom he has a losing record this year).
Hungrybox’s losers run continued strong in Losers Finals, where he earned another 3-0 win over Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby. The first set of Grand Finals was very close, with Hungrybox barely edging out a 3-2 victory over Mew2King. However, he convincingly overcame Mew2King in the second set with a 3-0 set count. In doing so, Hungrybox won EGLX 2019 Melee Singles and evened up his set count against Mew2King for the year.
“I’m pretty confident now that I achieved a really big landmark, which was rank one for three years in a row,” Hungrybox said after his tournament victory. “If I can do this, I can probably do anything now.”

At EGLX 2019, Mew2King had another shocking performance, proving to Melee fans that he is still one of the best. His run to 2nd place included wins over Matteo Caglioti, Hungrybox, and n0ne. Interestingly, Mew2King has not won a single set in the losers bracket across the three tournaments he has attended this year.
Even more shocking than Mew2King’s 2nd place finish was n0ne’s 3rd place finish. In Winners Quarters, n0ne became the first Captain Falcon player to beat Mang0 in roughly ten years. (Similarly, n0ne ended Mew2King’s 10-year winning streak against Falcon when they played at GOML 2016.) After defeating Mang0, n0ne scored his first win of the year over Wizzrobe before dropping sets to Mew2King and Hungrybox.
Miles “Soonsay” Foster won the Rising Stars sponsorship at EGLX 2019 as the highest-placing unsponsored Melee player. As a result, he will be able to attend three major tournaments in 2020 with flight and hotel costs covered. Soonsay’s run to 5th place included wins over Andres “Dope” Montiel, Ryan Ford, and Gio “null” Rossi.
