Takuto “Kameme” Ono won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at 2GG: SwitchFest 2019 in La Mirada, California on Sept. 1. Though he boasts a handful of tournament victories, this was his first since June. That was when Kameme won 2GG: Grand Tour – South Carolina.
Kameme made it out of pools with flawless victories over Juan “Lumbre” Castellon and Daniel “ven” Salas. He started off top 48 with a 3-1 victory over Nicko Bonilla. Then in Winners Quarters, Kameme defeated Jestise “MVD” Negron in a five-game set.
Kameme faced another five-game set in Winners Semis as he overcame Takuma “Tea” Hirooka. In Winners Finals, Kameme defeated Japanese Shulk main Seisuke “Kome” Komeda. Kameme finished off SwitchFest 2019 with another 3-2 victory over Tea in Grand Finals.
Smash Ultimate Singles at 2GG: SwitchFest 2019
Notably, the top 4 of 2GG: SwitchFest 2019 consisted exclusively of players from Japan. Kome particularly had a surprising run to Winners Finals, earning many upsets along the way. He took sets off of Tyler “Marss” Martins, Chris “WaDi” Boston, and Shuto “Shuton” Moriya.
The other Japanese players also had great performances. Tea placed 2nd, only losing close sets to SwitchFest 2019 champion Kameme. He was able to win sets against James “VoiD” Makekau-Tyson, William “Glutonny” Belaid, Paris “Light” Ramirez, Shuton, and Kome. En route to placing 4th, Shuton also beat Light and Glutonny.
Mexican Samus main Arturo “Joker” Ochoa had quite an impressive run to 7th place. After losing to Glutonny in pools, Joker went on a losers run filled with upsets. He eliminated Edgar “Sparg0” Valdez, Nicko, James “Rivers” Wade, and WaDi. Joker notably placed 9th at his previous A-tier, Low Tier City 7. There, he defeated Eric “ESAM” Lew and Dakota “Dakpo” Goode.
Larry “Larry Lurr” Holland had lackluster results in the first part of Smash Ultimate’s lifespan. Despite this, he had a solid run to 9th place at SwitchFest 2019. Along the way, Larry Lurr beat Sparg0 and VoiD. In contrast, Marss had a relatively disappointing 7th place finish, losing to Kome and Glutonny.
