Kolawole “Kola” Aideyan won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at the online tournament Soaked Series Invitational on Mar. 1. With 4095 registered entrants, this was the largest Super Smash Bros. wi-fi tourney to date. Tournament host “Cr1TiKaL” contributed a $20,000 prize pool, attracting many top players from the online and offline scenes alike.
Kola started top 128 with 3-0 wins over “Gospel” and Jeremy “Hydrocity” Jones. Using a mix of Snake and Young Link, he beat Eric “Pandarian” Lund 3-1. However, Kola dropped into losers after a five-game set against fellow Georgia native Carrington “Wrath” Osborne. Kola advanced into top 16 on losers side after a 3-0 victory against Elam “Pokelam” Rosario.
Kola reached top 4 with a string of wins over Ricky “LingLing” Gorritz, “Seth”, “Sonix”, and Brian “Cosmos” Kalu. He then proceeded to beat Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby. In Grand Finals of Soaked Series Invitational, Kola rematched Wrath. Kola performed much better this time around, beating Wrath 3-1 in set one and 3-0 in set two.
The day before Soaked Series Invitational, Kola won Clash of the Carolinas III in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, he defeated Randy “RFang” Fang, Toriano “Toast” Warren, Cameron “Vendetta” Garrett, Dabuz, and Chris “WaDi” Boston. Clash of the Carolinas III was a PGR C-tier event.

Wrath’s appearance in Grand Finals of Soaked Series Invitational was not exactly surprising. Many players consider Wrath’s main character, Sonic, incredibly tedious to fight online. Even so, Wrath scored many impressive wins on his road to 2nd place. He defeated Kola, Tyler “Marss” Martins, Cosmos, and Dabuz.
Another Sonic player, Sonix from the Dominican Republic, had a solid run to 7th place. After an early loss to Noah “Sharp” M., Sonix went on a deep run through the losers bracket. He eliminated “Train”, Zack “CaptainZack” Lauth (who entered under the tag “Secretary”), WaDi, and Charlie “Charliedaking” Antoun.
Like Sonix, Spencer “BestNess” Garner had to make a losers run, as he lost early to Bryce “B-Rice” Kennedy. BestNess defeated players like Pandarian, Markus “ShinyMark” Florido, Robin “RobinGG” Gronau, and Marss to place 7th at Soaked Series Invitational. After reaching top 16, BestNess made a tweet jokingly referencing a recent statement by Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. Ninja himself responded to BestNess’ tweet.
