Legends of Runeterra patch 0.9.0 nerfs Deny, changes EXP rewards

Legends of Runeterra patch 0.9.0 is the first major update of the Legends of Runeterra open beta. Previously, an update brought in some small fixes. However, this is the first time a significant amount of cards have been changed, such as Deny, Rhasa the Sunderer, and Commander Ledros. Experience (EXP) and Expedition rewards have changed as well.

Card changes in Legends of Runeterra

This update introduces a total of 15 cards and champion changes. Among them are some of the highly awaited changes, specifically to several of the more aggressive decks in Legends of Runeterra. Both the Ionia and Shadow Isles traits have taken significant hits this update.

Deny nerf Legends of Runeterra

The most significant change of the update is to Deny, which is one of the most influential and popular cards of the Ionia trait. Previously, at 3 mana, the card was incredibly frustrating to play against for many decks. Today’s update changes the cost of Deny from 3 to 4 mana. The change will have a significant effect on the metagame, as Deny will now no longer be castable with only spell mana. Because of this, to keep the option of playing Deny will have much more impact on the overall strength of your turns playing Ionia decks.

Other changes are to cards in the Mistwraith and other Noxious / Shadow Isles decks. Several of Shadow Isles’ best cards have been significantly nerfed. The two notable late-game cards that are changed are Commander Ledros and Rhasa the Sunderer. Both see their mana cost increased by 1. Commander Ledros, in return for this mana-increase, gains an extra point of attack. For Commander Ledros, and the card Blade of Ledros, the text has been changed to clarify its effect. However, the gameplay will be unaffected by this update.

The Legends of Runeterra “watchlist”

Included in the patch notes is a small note on the Legends of Runeterra watchlist. The developers explain that control decks and the Fearsome keyword are both being looked at for further nerfs. Several cards with Fearsome have already changed this update. The developers expect that the changes made today will be enough to keep Fearsome in check and to allow enough counterplay against the effect. However, if the Fearsome decks prove to be too oppressive, more changes could be coming in the future.

Changes to the EXP and Expedition rewards

The last significant change coming with this update is how much experience is earned. EXP allows players to work towards the free bonuses in Legends of Runeterra. The changes become quite complicated; however, here is what you need to know. Past your first 10 PVP wins in Legends of Runeterra, you used to start gaining a decreased amount of experience. However, this is no longer the case. The decrease in the experience now no longer starts until 16 wins in a single day.

The other notable change is that experience can now be earned for the grinders among us, after 31 wins in a single day. Previously, experience gained was capped at 30 wins. However, now a minimum of 100 experience will be obtained from each PVP victory.

Expeditions, on the other hand, have seen a significant decrease in experience. The end-of-trail experience bonus has been decreased at each stage of rewards from 0 to 7 wins. See the image below for the new experience rewards.
