Leyline of Sanctity reprint revealed in Core Set 2020 spoilers
Leylines have always been one of the most powerful card cycles in Magic: The Gathering. The ability to begin the game with a free enchantment on the battlefield is a huge asset. It puts you at an advantage right from the get-go and can sometimes win games alone. Therefore, it’s no surprise to many that the best leylines command expensive prices. As of the writing of this article, Leyline of the Void costs $50 per copy. Leyline of Sanctity is no exception to the rule either, commanding a market price of $22. However, a reprint of the leyline has been announced for Core Set 2020, featuring brand new art! This new reprint will drive down the cost significantly and make it much more affordable for players.
Breakdown
Leyline of Sanctity, like the entire leyline cycle, can begin on the battlefield if you draw it in your opening hand. Its effect is simple: You have hexproof. But how powerful is being hexproof really, you may ask? Well, being immune to targeted effects is a huge boon in many ways. Just take Modern, for example, where the card sees play in many decks as both a side and mainboard option. It stops targeted discard spells like Thoughtseize and Duress completely. Bogles play it to stop edict effects like Liliana of the Veil. Burn struggles heavily against it, suddenly unable to shoot their Lava Spikes at you. This reprint will be a godsend for Modern and Legacy players alike looking to protect themselves.
This reprint does mean Leyline of Sanctity will be in Standard, but what does that mean for the format? It’s difficult to say whether or not it will see main deck play, but it is good enough to sideboard. Slowing down mono-red is fantastic. It also stops popular cards like Thought Erasure and Expansion // Explosion. There’s also a couple of combo decks floating around in Standard, and there could be more in the future, so having this card as a nice safety valve seems like a good thing for the format. On the flip side, combo decks might try to use this card to protect themselves against discard spells. It definitely will be interesting to see how players work the card into their decks.
