Logan “LSD” Dunn won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Cody “iBDW” Schwab’s Sub Tournament on January 3. The event used a non-standard ruleset, granting players a stage ban in best-of-five sets. Traditionally, stage bans have only been allowed in best-of-three sets.
LSD advanced out of pools without dropping any games. He started his run in top 32 by defeating Christian “Kürv” Melendez 3 – 1. Then in Winners Quarters, LSD beat Ben Strandmark 3 – 1. Thus, he secured a spot in top 8 on winners side.
In Winners Semis, LSD scored an impressive 3 – 0 victory over Steven “FatGoku” Callopy, the tournament’s number one seed. Then in Winners Finals, he beat Dawud “Aklo” Rahman 3 – 2, albeit in the midst of some connection issues.
When LSD and Aklo rematched in Grand Finals, they found that their connection issues made it impossible to play Melee well. As a result, they made the unorthodox decision to play an online version of Connect Four instead. Aklo won the first Connect Four set 2 – 1, but LSD won the second one 2 – 0. As a result, LSD won the iBDW Sub Tournament in a very unexpected way.

Other results from the iBDW Sub Tournament
Despite the irregularity of his sets against LSD, Aklo still had a strong run to 2nd place at the iBDW Sub Tournament. In top 32, he defeated Jacob “Faust” Fischer 3 – 0 and Ben “SFOP” Duren 3 – 1. Additionally, Aklo beat Isaac “bobby big ballz” P. 3 – 1 and Ben 3 – 0.
Ben scored several impressive wins on his path to 3rd place at this event. After losing to LSD in Winners Quarters, Ben defeated Timothy “TzD” D. to get into top 8. From there, he took sets off of Toussaint “2saint” Turnier, bobby big ballz, and FatGoku.
Shephard “Fiction” Lima was DQed during the very first round of the iBDW Sub Tournament. Nevertheless, he made an impressive losers run to fifth place, all while using his secondary, Falco. Fiction didn’t drop any games in top 32, eliminating Caleb “Tarchwood” Martie, Christopher “Ober” Redbourne, Kürv, and David “joepesci” DiMichele. Fiction also earned a 3 – 1 win over SFOP in the first round of top 8.
