Mang0 wins Smash Melee Singles at Slippi Champions League Week 1

Joseph “Mang0” Marquez won Super Smash Bros. Melee Division 1 Singles at Slippi Champions League Week 1 on October 11. As a result, he got to pick his first opponent of Week 2’s Division 1 single-elimination bracket. The rest of the top 4 players picked their Week 2 opponents as well.

Mang0 kicked off Week 1 of the Slippi Champions League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson. He seemed to be in trouble in Semifinals, as he lost his first two games against Cody “iBDW” Schwab. However, Mang0 managed to reverse 3-0 iBDW and advance into Finals. Though they’ve had several close sets, Mang0 is still undefeated against iBDW in online tournaments.

In Finals, Mang0 faced off against Zain Naghmi. Their set ended with an anti-climactic self-destruct from Zain, giving Mang0 a convincing 3-1 victory. Notably, this marked Zain’s first time losing a netplay set as Marth this year.

The rest of Division 1

Considering his flawless win streak before Slippi Champions League Week 1, 2nd place was technically disappointing for Zain. Even so, he defeated a pair of Falcon mains, beating Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett 3-0 and Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby 3-1. Prior to 2019, Zain had notoriously struggled in the Captain Falcon match-up, with losses to players like Johnny “S2J” Kim, Jason “Gahtzu” Diehl, and Alex “Captain Smuckers” Cottrell.

iBDW and n0ne rounded out the top 4 of this event. iBDW beat Justin “Plup” McGrath 3-1, repeating his win in their set at the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 2. In addition, n0ne scored a shocking 3-2 upset over Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma, marking his first win against the number one offline player.

Week 2 will feature the following Division 1 matches:

  • Mang0 vs. Wizzrobe
  • n0ne vs. Plup
  • Zain vs. Avery “Ginger” Wilson
  • iBDW vs. Hungrybox

Other results from Slippi Champions League Week 1

Ginger was the only player to advance from Division 2 to Division 1 at Slippi Champions League Week 1. He kicked off Division 2 with a dominant 3-0 win over DaJuan “Shroomed” McDaniel. Notably, Ginger had never taken a game off of Shroomed prior to this event. In Division 1 Relegation, Ginger beat Axe 3-2, finishing the set with a four-stock.

Joseph “Azel” Resplandor and Dawud “Aklo” Rahman secured spots in Division 2 for next week. Both players had qualified for Division 2 Relegation at Rollback Rumble. Azel beat Albert Luu 3-2 in a Falco ditto, while Aklo beat Shroomed 3-0, thus knocking Albert and Shroomed out of the League.
