Mang0 wins Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at GOML 2019

Cloud9’s Joseph “Mang0” Marquez has finally done it. He has crowned himself as the Get On My Level 2019 Super Smash Bros. Melee champion. With this result, Mang0 has finally broken a streak of 19 events and almost two years without winning. The last time the North American player was able to taste victory was Super Smash Con 2017.

Back then, he defeated Echo Fox’s Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman in a one-sided grand final. This time, however, the battle proved much more exciting. Mang0 beat fellow countryman Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson in a nail-biting affair. The Cloud9 player ended up taking the game with a score of 3-2.

Before the final, Mang0 had already had a difficult time against James “Swedish Delight” Liu in the Winners Round 3. Apart from that, Mang0 had decimated all opponents in his way to victory, including renowned, old-school players such as William “Leffen” Hjelte. Once he reached the finals, however, Axe did not let him raise the trophy without putting up a good fight first.

Axe, a Pikachu specialist, definitely stood a chance against Mang0’s Falco. He dragged the series all the way to a deciding fifth game. By that time, Mang0 was probably questioning his own ability to win it all after a year and a half without doing so. Regardless, the veteran rose the occasion, dominating the final game and ending his losing streak once and for all.

Amidst all the emotion, Mang0 posted a message on his own Twitter account: “That’s how you end a dry spell mutha fucka.”

Super Smash Bros. Melee‘s significance within the Smash community has recently taken a hit due to the rise of its more modern successor, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In spite of that, Mang0’s achievement will now forever be marked as a legendary one in the video game’s history.

Get On My Level 2019, which is taking place in Toronto, also hosts events for Ultimate, the original Super Smash Bros., and the Brawl version. Yesterday even saw the decisive matches for the winners of the Doubles tournaments. All the other competitions are ending today, so keep an eye out for the results if you want to know who the best players in the world are at this specific moment.

Earlier today, Panda Global’s Dan “SuPeRbOoMfAn” Hoyt raised the Smash 64 event’s trophy, taking with him $112.88 dollars as price. NRG’s Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada, for his part, triumphed at the Brawl competition, which boasted three dollars more than 64‘s for the lion’s share. Thanks to his victory, however, Mang0 has taken home $1,871.47. Such a large number indicates how relevant Melee still is within the Smash community.
