Aidan “GorgoKnight” Provenzano, a Call of Duty player for North American esports organization Midnight Esports, has admitted to betting on his own league in a now-deleted tweet. Currently a substitute player, GorgoKnight admitted to this in a reply to a tweet. As with most sports, however, players are not allowed to bet on the leagues they are in themselves.
GorgoKnight Betting Situation
GorgoKnight replied to a chain of tweets by Jordan “JKap” Kaplan and Kevin “Raw” Zocchi, describing his betting gains. According to him, “I bet the spread on the series with GenG/OpTic and [EvilGeniuses] and UYU as long as it went 3-2 3-1. I was not down 1K and up 5 cheers brotha, drinks on me at Anaheim.”
There are two games in question that GorgoKnight is discussing. The first includes the May 13 CWL Pro League game between OpTic Gaming and Gen.G. The second is the May 14 game with Evil Geniuses competing against UYU.
Alex “BeZo” Benjamin replied to this tweet. “You do realize you’re not allowed to make bets for a league you’re in right?” However, GorgoKnight did not take the helpful reminder kindly and replied with “Sue me.”
CWL Handbook Rules
Section 6.2 of the CWL Handbook, titled “Betting and Gambling,” lists this as prohibited behavior. It states that “gambling on the outcome of CWL Games or Matches… can pose a serious threat to the integrity and public confidence in the CWL.” It then details that “participants are not allowed to place… bets on any Games or Matches or in any other way associated with the CWL.” This section of the CWL Handbook also states that the participant shouldn’t ask others or affect others to place bets on CWL Games too.
Later, the penalties section lists minimum and maximum penalties for players that violate these rules. The minimum penalty includes a $1000 fine and/or a suspension. However, 1st and 2nd offenses can also result in indefinite suspensions depending on the violation.
The CWL Pro League has not yet given out a punishment to this player. For now, we will have to wait and see how the situation develops.
