Christmas has come early for Call of Duty fans, as the Modern Warfare servers are live for the first time. The Gunfight open alpha was slated to start tomorrow, Aug 23, but Infinity Ward decided to give us an extra day to enjoy the mode. If you own a PlayStation 4 and have an Internet connection, you can download the alpha from the PS Store right now.
The Gunfight alpha file is around 32 GB, however, so make sure you have enough room on your hard drive. Modern Warfare‘s 2v2 mode will last until Sunday, Aug 25, so don’t wait to play! The next chance we’ll have to play Modern Warfare is on Sept 12, when the open beta goes live.

While not the full-fledged beta, this open alpha will give us a good estimate as to where Modern Warfare is gameplay-wise. The core mechanics will transfer over from Gunfight to standard multiplayer, though the maps will not.

Along with this, all of the weapons, equipment, and attachments will also be in multiplayer. That said, we don’t know if Infinity Ward will add or subtract any weapons from Gunfight come Sept 12.
In terms of what’s available this weekend, Gunfight uses regular matchmaking to find online games. You are randomly paired with a teammate if you don’t party up with a friend, and you’ll face off against two other opponents. There are no custom matches for this alpha, so online matches are your only option.
Each game goes up to 11 rounds, with the winner being the first to 6 rounds. Every round you use a different loadout and don’t regenerate health. There are also a total of 5 maps in this alpha: Docks, Stack, Pine, King, and Speedball.
