Modern Warfare killstreaks won’t ‘wrap’ in a single life, says Joe Cecot

During the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer premiere, fans got their first taste of the revamped killstreaks. Infinity Ward brought back a plethora of old-school killstreaks as well the old system of earning streaks. However, it’s this system that is causing some concern within the community. On Twitter, one of the lead design directors for Infinity Ward disclosed some alarming information about the killstreaks in Modern Warfare: They won’t wrap. You can add that to the small list of issues the community wants fixed.

What does ‘wrapping’ killstreaks mean?

Even though you may not know what killstreak wrapping is, chances are you’ve grown accustomed to it. Essentially, killstreak wrapping is earning multiple sets of streaks in a single life. For example, if you have a set of streaks that goes up to 10 kills and you go on a 20-killstreak, you would earn that set of streaks twice. This mechanic has been in Call of Duty since the original Black Ops in 2010.

However, according to Design Director Joe Cecot, Modern Warfare will not have this feature. Here’s what he said on Twitter:

This was a big surprise to most in the community. Killstreak wrapping has become customary for Call of Duty, and the fact that Modern Warfare won’t include it is startling. For one, it allows for players to go on much bigger killstreaks and earn higher scores in public matches.

Secondly, since there is no mini-map, many players will use UAVs for their killstreaks. Though they’re extremely useful, they only cost 3-4 kills and you can only get one of them per life. It appears Infinity Ward is trying to veer players away from relying on the mini-map too much.

How does this affect Modern Warfare?

While it might not seem like a big change, killstreak wrapping is a big part of multiplayer. It makes one’s life much more valuable and an influx of UAVs would be helpful for team-play.

Though Cecot gave no reasoning for this decision, we can make a couple of assumptions as to why Infinity Ward chose this route. One guess is they are attempting to focus their game on gunplay more so than killstreak usage. If you can only earn one Chopper Gunner per life, you will be using your gun more often.

Another guess is they want to tone down the Kill Chain perk. Located in the Perk 2 category, Kill Chain allows for any killstreak kill to count towards earning your next streak. So if you earn two kills with a Cruise Missile, those will earn you a Wheelson at 7 kills.

This perk will no doubt be a popular choice among players since it’s easier to earn kills with a streak than it is with your gun or equipment. However, an easy fix for this would be to not allow Kill Chain to wrap killstreaks.

Either way you slice it, this feature will be missed in Modern Warfare. It does help out newer players, but as we’ve seen in the past, this practice doesn’t always work out. We’ll have to wait until after the open beta to see if Infinity Ward decides to change this based off played feedback.
