Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launched without a plethora of features fans have come to expect with a Call of Duty title. Since release, the community has complained about a lack of maps, strange gameplay decisions, and limited game modes. However, while there are certainly tons of missing features in multiplayer, custom games may have the worst of it. If you’ve played any custom games, then you might have noticed the game feels slightly different than normal. This is due to the fact that the custom games servers are running on 12Hz, an abysmal number. Regular multiplayer runs closer to 30-40Hz, which is why things feel off in custom matches. One video in particular, however, demonstrates this extremely well.
Custom games still on 12Hz servers
If you’re unfamiliar with the 12Hz debate in Modern Warfare, it essentially revolves around connection. The tick rate of each custom match, which currently sits at 12Hz, means that the servers aren’t receiving as much information. So, if you’re in a gunfight, what you see on your screen won’t necessarily be what actually happens.
This is particularly evident in gunfights that involve running around cover. Sometimes, if you enter a doorway while being shot, you will still die even though you’re halfway in the building. This is because the server is lagging behind what you are seeing on your screen. A Reddit video by user Cadebart7 showcases this perfectly.
In the video, the enemy shoots the player outside of the doorway. However, the player, on their screen, was well inside the building before being killed. The above clip demonstrates the limited ability of 12Hz servers.
It’s unclear why this hasn’t been fixed by Infinity Ward or why it was included in Modern Warfare at all. However, two months in, it seems unlikely we’ll receive a fix anytime soon.
