Realm Royale and Paladins developer Hi-Rez has a new third-person hero shooter in the works. Titled Rogue Company, it will release on PC and consoles in 2020 and will feature full cross-platform play and progression.
Rogue Company will offer a number of objective-based PvP modes. Players will use a combination of pre-selected guns and melee weapons, alongside equipment such as drones. Each playable character will also have their own set abilities. The first gameplay trailer shows fast-paced action, in which two teams of 5 air-drop onto a dockyard. If the trailer is any indication, team-play and coordination will also be an important factor to the gameplay.
Hi-Rez are no novices in designing competitive hero shooters. However, this is their first stab at a modern setting. Virtually all of their previous titles occupy fantasy and sci-fi worlds. Rogue Company is about “a top-secret syndicate of elite mercenaries around the globe”. These mercenaries, called Rogues, engage in “solving the world’s deadliest and most challenging missions”. The solutions will naturally involve blowing up other players a lot.
From everything known so far, perhaps the biggest highlight is cross-play from launch. On PC, the game will release on the Epic Games Store. PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox players will face-off without restrictions. Players will also share account progression across every platform they play Rogue Company on.
We will have more information on Rogue Company soon, with game modes being revealed in October. The official release is slated for some time in 2020, and players can already sign up for the open alpha on the game’s site. There is no word yet on whether the game will ship with a battle royale mode. However, at this point, it feels rather self-defeating not to, so our money is on a BR mode coming eventually.
