New Mythic card Morophon, the Boundless revealed for Modern Horizons

The latest Mythic card revealed in Magic: The Gathering’s Modern Horizons spoilers is a banger! Have you ever wanted to build a five-color EDH deck but didn’t have a tribal commander for it? Have you been stuck running Progenitus just to include absolutely every horse or djinn card? Well, Morophon, the Boundless has you covered as the brand new commander for every underrepresented tribe!

Breakdown

For 7 mana of any color, Morophon, the Boundless gives you a 6/6 Shapeshifter that covers all creature types. While on the battlefield, he reduces the cost of every tribal creature your deck is trying to play by WUBRG. As a bonus, he even gives them all +1/+1. There are tons of fantastic tribes he can act as commander for. If you’re looking for some underrepresented tribes to try with it, there are horses, minotaurs, skeletons, archers, wurms, giants, dwarves, shamans, horrors, turtles, and more! The possibilities are absolutely limitless, and I expect this card will find its way into the command zone of many creative EDH players.

But what about in the 99? Morophon’s colors restrict him to five-color decks, so your options on decks to slot him into are a bit limited. A couple of decks that come to mind are Najeela, the Blade-Blossom, The Ur-Dragon, or five-color Slivers. The discount Morophon provides for these decks is insane, letting you play your cheaper creatures for next to nothing. Not to mention he generally makes mana costs easier by compensating for any missing colors. Any five-color tribal deck that can abuse his mana cheating ability should find a slot for him in the 99. It’s also worth noting Morophon combos with Fist of Suns and Jodah, Archmage Eternal to make your spells cost 0!

Verdict

Unfortunately for Modern, Morophon is a bit too expensive. 7 mana for a 6/6 that just makes it easier to cast creatures is not fast enough for a format where turn 4 kills are pretty much the standard. It might be interesting in Limited, however, considering the abundance of changeling cards that have been spoiled so far.
