New Smash Ultimate update to add balance changes and VR mode

The next Smash Ultimate update will become available on May 30 at 6:00 PM PT / 9:00 PM ET. This update will include balance changes and new options for amiibo. It will also include a rather unexpected addition: VR compatibility.

The details of the update were first provided through the SSBUBot Twitter page. SSBUBot was created in order to present and archive update data from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sometimes, it can even leak update data from the game before this data becomes publicly available.

The Toy-Con VR Goggles will make Smash Ultimate‘s new virtual reality mode possible. These VR Goggles are part of Nintendo Labo, a series of cardboard peripherals that can be assembled and used to interact with Nintendo games.

Players can already use an amiibo of a playable fighter to scan a trainable Figure Player (FP) into the game. An additional section in the Games & More menu will soon allow players to send their FP on a journey to level up. Players will also be able to take their FP into battle in an online arena.

Meanwhile, information on balance changes is not currently available. However, Nintendo will likely release patch notes sometime after the update goes live.

Smash Ultimate update’s competitive impact

Version 3.1.0 will release just ahead of Smash’N’Splash 5, an S tier Smash Ultimate tournament. Because players will not have time to practice with the new patch, Smash’N’Splash will run version 3.0.1 instead.

This is not the first time Nintendo has released a major update just before a Smash Ultimate tournament. Nintendo released major patches less than a week before both GENESIS 6 and Pound 2019. This may be unavoidable to an extent with the plethora of Smash Bros. events, especially throughout the summer. Nevertheless, it is interesting that the timing of these patches has so often coincided with Ultimate supermajors.

Smash’N’Splash 5 will be the second Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor in two weeks. It follows MomoCon 2019 exactly one weekend prior. Competitors at Smash’N’Splash will have to wait until the tournament ends on June 2 to enjoy the VR mode and other features coming in today’s new update.
