OverActive Media, the parent group of the Toronto Defiant and Splyce, has secured $22 million in funding. This funding will add onto the $21.5 million that they secured back in October of last year.

It is expected that these funds will be going to both their Overwatch League team and their League of Legends team in Europe. Additionally, these funds will be going towards finalizing the acquisition of Splyce. OverActive Media did not name any of the investors in this round of funding. In November, OverActive Media announced the full purchase of Splyce moving forward. Where could these funds be heading for the company?
Helping out the Toronto Defiant
For one, this new round of funding could help support their newest team, the Toronto Defiant. Back in October, the company revealed that Toronto was getting an Overwatch League team. Splyce was going to run team operations for the Defiant as well. Although they have already locked in their roster for the season, there are many other venues to help the team improve. For example, having a dedicated training facility for the Defiant could be great over in LA. The team already has a great team house in Beverly Hills, so maybe putting some resources into the structure behind the players could work as well.
Building in the LEC with Splyce
Splyce’s League of Legends team could also use some help in the upcoming year. The team secured themselves a spot in the newly-franchised LEC, which is a rebranded version of the EU LCS. Their lineup consists of some decent European players, but there is some room for improvement on the roster. For example, the team has Marek “Humanoid” Brázda in the mid lane, who is an 18-year-old rookie. If he doesn’t work out this split, they could hunt for a better replacement for the summer. Kasper “Kobbe” Kobberup was a decent ADC last year, but Tore “Norskeren” Hoel Eilertsen may not be good enough this spring.
Their coaching staff could also use a boost should they falter this year. Peter Dun will get a good chance this season to show his skills as a coach, but they may need more support in the grand scheme of things. Maybe they could hire better assistant coaches and possibly a performance coach similar to Weldon Green. Life coaches have shown their worth on multiple teams, and have helped some teams reach their true potential over the last few years.
Building More Teams?
Although Splyce is known for their League of Legends team, they are also in other esports as well. They have teams in Call of Duty, Starcraft II, Halo, and have multiple players in the FGC. It would make sense that OverActive Media would focus their efforts on their newest venture in the Overwatch League and League of Legends. However, we could see them try to step out into new esports as the year goes on.
