PlayStation reportedly paying all employees even if can’t work remotely

Video game brand PlayStation is one step ahead of the curve, ensuring their workers are financially stable during these difficult times. Because of the recent closure of their offices and manufacturing facilities, they had sent home many employees. PlayStation plans to pay employees whether or not they’re able to work remotely. In order to accommodate both their European and North American workers, they plan to keep them home with full pay until April 30. Additionally, these employees will also be receiving a $1,000 one-time stipend. Waypoint Senior Reporter Patrick Klepek recently received a memo reportedly stating these details. As the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation continues to grow, some companies like PlayStation are trying their best.

PlayStation will seemingly include external contractors in this plan, in addition to covering all Worldwide Studios employees. Some of these studios include Sucker Punch Productions, Santa Monica Studio, Guerrilla Games, and Insomniac Games. In a statement released on March 27, Sony reiterated that it had closed assorted offices and plants as the company closely monitors the situation. Since their employees are working from home, there may be a production delay for future game titles.

Doing the right thing

PlayStation is perhaps one of few companies that may send workers home with full pay. On the other hand, other gaming companies, such as GameStop, faced criticism for keeping their stores open during the pandemic. As the pandemic continues to worsen, businesses all over the country will continue to close their doors. Some states have even ordered all nonessential businesses to close. For many employees, this poses a personal financial and employment issue.
