Lunar New Year celebrations are beginning around the world this month, and Pokémon GO is no different. The Pokémon AR game will hold a Year of the Ox event, based on Tauros. The event begins Tuesday, February 9 at 10 a.m. local time, and runs through Sunday, February 14 at 1 p.m. local time.

The Pokémon GO Lunar New Year event will celebrate the Year of the Ox with timed research featuring Tauros, the Wild Bull Pokémon. During the event, red-colored Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild, and players will have an increased chance at encountering a shiny Gyarados. There will also be special Field Research tasks, different Pokémon hatchings from eggs, and alternate Pokémon in raids.

Here are the Pokémon appearing more frequently in the wild:

  • Goldeen
  • Krabby
  • Magmar
  • Magikarp
  • Miltank
  • Meditite
  • Tepig

These Pokémon will hatch more frequently from 5 km eggs:

  • Rattata
  • Ekans
  • Mankey
  • Ponyta
  • Mareep
  • Houndour
  • Miltank
  • Torchic
  • Bagon
  • Buneary
  • Tepig
  • Litleo

Meowth and its regional variants will be available as rewards for completing Field Research tasks, along with Miltank and Meditite. Be sure to keep an eye out for shinies too.

Other Pokémon GO Year of the Ox bonuses

There are a fair few other bonuses coming too. Mega Gyarados will make its first appearance in Pokémon GO during the Year of the Ox event. Mega Gyarados will be spawning in mega raids, along with Mega Ampharos and Mega Pidgeot. In 5-star raids, Latios and Latias will be appearing.

For the duration of the event, players will receive more Poké Balls from gifts as well. Exchanging gifts, trading, and battling in raids with Best Freinds will also lead to a greater chance at becoming Lucky Friends. Trading Pokémon will result in higher chances at getting a Lucky Pokémon too, and it looks like there’s plenty to go at during the Year of the Ox event.

Finally, trading range is going to go up to 40 km during the event. If you don’t want to miss out on getting the most from the Pokémon GO Year of the Ox event, you might want to take part next week.
