Riot Games has become one of the largest names in video games due to the stellar success of its MOBA title, League of Legends. Rumors have been surrounding the gaming world saying that Riot was working on a fighting game since its acquisition of Radiant Entertainment in 2016. Today, EVO co-founder and Riot employee Tom Cannon confirmed the project. “Back in 2016, when we joined forces with Riot. I said that we were going to go in the hole for a while, and I want to be able to let people in on maybe the worst kept secret in the universe, which is I can confirm that we are working on a fighting game for Riot,” Tom Cannon said today at the first day of EVO. Steve Scott‘s reaction was one that represented the excitement and hype this will bring to the FGC.

Radiant Entertainment

Radiant Entertainment was working on a free-to-play fighting game called Rising Thunder when they were acquired by Riot. With the acquisition, work on Rising Thunder stopped immediately and it was announced that they would begin work on a new game. Tom said, “The reason why we did Rising Thunder in the first place was because we felt like fighting games deserved to be enjoyed by way more people. As big as things are, we think they have the potential to get bigger.” There is no doubt that Riot Games has the reach and marketability to take almost any title and turn heads. The task ahead of Riot now will be — can they make a fighting game that stands with the likes of Street Fighter or Tekken?

No specifics of the game have been revealed thus far, but this did validate a lingering rumor throughout the FGC. Tom and Tony Cannon are pillars in the community for the incredible work and events they have put on for the FGC. Now, with the ability to work on a game with one of the largest developers in the world, they have a chance to wow us all once more.
