Riot Games reveals details about Arcane animated series

Riot Games announced it would be producing an animated series named Arcane during its 10-year anniversary event stream. The animated series was correctly predicted by esports consultant Rod “Slasher” Breslau on Twitter beforehand, but the stream showcased other projects like the Project A shooter game that were not previously known.

Arcane animated series

The Arcane trailer ties into both League of Legends and the Legends of Runeterra digital card game that was recently announced. This is because the animated series is based on planet Runeterra. The cyberpunk city design, which boasts blimps and cathedral-like architecture, looks similar to the progressive city of Piltover, specifically a part of the Zaun district.

“Piltover’s wealth has allowed Zaun to develop in tandem; a dark mirror of the city above. Many of the goods coming to Piltover find their way into Zaun’s black markets, and hextech inventors who find the restrictions placed upon them in the city above too restrictive often find their dangerous research welcomed in Zaun,” writes the lore for the Zaun district in League of Legends. “Unfettered development of volatile technologies and reckless industry has rendered whole swathes of Zaun polluted and dangerous.”

The multiple bronze structures and monuments fit in with Piltover’s description. However, the other scenes in the Arcane trailer show a darker-themed city with a polluted look instead. Piltover and Zaun are a part of the same area, but one is seen as the light and the latter as the dark. Champions of Piltover include peacekeepers, elite agents, and adventurers Camille, Caitlyn, Ezreal, Jayce, and Orianna. On the other hand, those of Zaun include Jinx, Ekko, Twitch, Blitzcrank, and Dr. Mundo, which look a lot more evil.

League of Legends lore

The Arcane animated series focuses on the lore of legends and their beginning. It will feature two iconic League of Legends champions and the “power that tears them apart”. This seems to confirm that the champions Jinx and Vi will be the main characters. Jinx is described as a maniac and impulsive criminal, because of her hatred of boredom. Vi is also originally a criminal from Zaun, but she ends up working with the Wardens to keep the peace in Piltover.

There is no set date for when Arcane will release. However, the trailer shows the year of 2020, which will make it most likely sometime during the 2020 competitive season. Many had originally thought of it as an anime, which usually features a different art style, but fans are still excited.
