Rocket League developer Psyonix announced March 24 that it is releasing Rocket League Sideswipe, a Rocket League variant for Android and iOS devices.
Sideswipe is a free, two-dimensional version of Rocket League that features short one-on-one and two-on-two matches. The trailer shows two modes so far: a slightly altered standard mode with vertical goals high up the wall and hoops where the goal is horizontal and near the floor. Sideswipe will also bring some existing Rocket League features to mobile.
Rocket League Sideswipe is made for old and new fans
While the game has been built from the ground-up, Psyonix promises that both existing and new fans will find the controls easy to pick up. Like its existing big brother, the mobile version of Rocket League can be played with all the basic moves but will also feature advanced maneuvers for higher-level players. The trailer shows some highly mechanical plays, and if the main version of Rocket League is anything to go by, the skill ceiling will be lofty.
That’s not the only thing Rocket League Sideswipe shares with the main version of the game, either. Car customization and ranked leaderboards both feature in the mobile version, which may just be what Sideswipe needs to feel like a full-fledged Rocket League experience.
The mobile game has no solid release date yet, apart from worldwide 2021. A limited-time alpha is available on Android for players from Australia and New Zealand, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Psyonix promises more information on both the game and future betas is coming in the months ahead.
Australian Twitch streamer EJUBU13 took a look at the game soon after the announcement, and while the game is still in alpha, it already looks like a well optimized but chaotic experience. It looks like Rocket League fans will soon have a lot of new moves to master on their phones.
