Johnny “S2J” Kim won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at The Kid, the Goat, and the Mang0 on June 9. It was his fourth significant tournament win of the year. He also won Poi Poundaz 2 in January, Schism 3 in February, and Fight for SoCal 4 in March.
S2J made it into top 8 by defeating Michael “MikeHaze” Pulido and Juan “Medz” Garcia. Once in top 8, S2J proceeded to win the tournament without dropping a set. Along the way, he beat Shepard “Fiction” Lima and double eliminated Kurtis “moky” Pratt.
This event was the third entry in 2GG’s “The Mang0” tournament series. These tournaments have historically been casual in nature, with many top players playing secondaries, getting drunk, or dropping out of the tournament altogether. The Kid, The Goat, and The Mang0 was no exception.
Joseph “Mang0” Marquez, the tournament’s namesake, dropped out of Singles, as did Cody “iBDW” Schwab and Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby. Similarly, Te Tuhi “Spud” Kelly underperformed due to being hungover. Zain Naghmi opted to play Fox rather than his main, Marth.

However, only players already attending Smash Summit 8 could afford to play casually at this event. That is because The Kid, the Goat, and the Mang0 was the final qualifier for Smash Summit 8. As a result, many players tried their hardest to compete for the coveted Summit spot.
Second place finisher moky earned the final spot at Smash Summit. His run to 2nd included wins over Weston “Westballz” Dennis, Derek “Aura” Olsen, Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni, and James “Swedish Delight” Liu.
The final Smash Summit 8 lineup is now set. Along with moky, the following players will compete at Summit: Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, Justin “Plup” McGrath, William “Leffen” Hjelte, Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson, Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett, Masaya “aMSa” Chikamoto, Drew “Drephen” Scoles, Avery “Ginger” Wilson, Mang0, Zain, S2J, Spud, Trif, iBDW, and n0ne.

The Kid, the Goat, and the Mang0 featured many upsets, even disregarding drunk top players who underperformed. Medz had a difficult road to top 8, as he was only the third seed in his pool. Nevertheless, Medz placed 7th with wins over a hungover Spud, Kevin “PewPewU” Toy, and Kalindi “KJH” Henderson.
Aura had an easier road through bracket because Mang0 dropped out. Nonetheless, he earned impressive wins over Kashan “Chillindude” Khan and Armand “ARMY” Del Duca on his way to 9th place.
Swedish Delight and Joey “Lucky” Aldama both made deep losers runs after dropping into the losers bracket early. Swedish Delight lost to Fiction in Winners Finals of his pool. Despite this, he finished in 3rd place, beating Eduardo “Eddy Mexico” Rincon, Aura, PewPewU, Fiction, and Lucky.
Lucky was sent to losers even earlier, falling to MikeHaze in Winners Semis of his pool. Still, he overcame difficult opponents like Westballz, ARMY, Steven “FatGoku” Callopy, Medz, and SFAT in order to finish in 4th.
Melee Doubles results
Swedish Delight and Daniel “ChuDat” Rodriguez won Melee Doubles at The Kid, the Goat, and the Mang0. Notably, retired Melee god Adam “Armada” Lindgren entered Doubles at this event, teaming with iBDW. They placed 3rd.
Quite impressively, Axe and PewPewU made top 8 in Doubles at this event going completely random characters. They managed to defeat Jonathan “TheRealThing” Clinton & Brandon “homemadewaffles” Collier and Zain & Chillindude.
