Salem wins Smash Ultimate Singles at Frame Perfect Series 3: Online

Saleem “Salem” Young won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Frame Perfect Series 3: Online on November 8. This marked his first victory at a major online tournament this year. Rather than using his main character, Snake, Salem relied on his Hero and Steve secondaries.

Salem coasted into winners side of top 32 with a series of predictable victories. After dropping a game to Xavier “Savior” Sanchez in his first set of the tournament, Salem swept his next opponents. This included 2-0 wins against Sam “SAMFISH” Schilling, Rodrigo “Cloudy” Arias, and Bernardo “Bernie” Maciel.

Afterward, Salem scored his first upsets of the Frame Perfect Series 3: Online Smash Ultimate bracket. He defeated Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez Perez in his first match of top 32. Then in Winners Quarters, Salem decisively beat Gabriel “Epic_Gabriel” Romero 2-0.

In Winners Semis, Salem scored a 3-2 victory over Carlos “Sonix” Pérez. Then, he faced an unexpected opponent: Wii Fit Trainer main Varun “varun” Rao. Not only did Salem beat varun 3-1 in Winners Finals, but he conquered varun again in Grand Finals. In their second set, Salem finished his Frame Perfect Series 3: Online Ultimate run with a commanding 3-0 victory.

In his best online Smash Ultimate performance by far, varun finished in 2nd place at Frame Perfect Series 3: Online. His run through the winners bracket included wins over Edgar “Sparg0” Valdez, “CptRemex”, Jaiden “Ribbon” Vong, and Yezre’el “Yez” Askew. In addition, varun narrowly defeated Epic_Gabriel in Losers Finals.

Spencer “BestNess” Garner dropped into the losers bracket earlier than expected, as he was upset by Ribbon in top 64. However, he made a deep losers run to finish in 4th place at Frame Perfect Series 3: Online’s Ultimate event. BestNess eliminated Wanda “enhancedpv” Davis, Kabi, MkLeo, Sparg0, and Andrik González en route to top 8. From there, he won sets against Willow “IcyMist” Barto and Sonix.

IcyMist and James “Rivers” Wade both pulled off upsets and other impressive wins on their respective paths to 7th place. IcyMist defeated Colin “colinies” Landals, Kiyarash Younessi, Arturo “Joker” Ochoa, Noah “Sharp” McCulley, and Ribbon. Meanwhile, Rivers beat Rick “Rickles” Aguayo, Elam “Pokelam” Rosario, Sharp, and Rylan “ChunkyKong” Silva.
